Default Culpepper to be traded, probably today other NFL notes

Speculation is that he is headed to Oakland, although Miami or NYJ could be in the mix.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2361473

Does this make you happy Pagal? I think the Vikings were a playoff team last year if Brad Johnson is their QB from day one.

The Raiders just continue to make bad decisions, one right after another. It's great as a Broncos fan.

In other news, it is speculated that Terrell Owens is likely to end up in...wait for it....Kansas City!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...nfl/index.html

Mixed feelings on this one. I'll be happy if he doesn't go to Denver. I would rather not have him in the division though. If he doesn't implode he could push KC over the top, at least offensively where he addresses their biggest need. That defense still needs help though. What do you think Sylvanfan?

Free agency starts at midnight tonigh. The salary cap was bumped by $7.5M for this season. Makes the majority of teams big players.

BTW...it looks like San Diego has decided to let Brees walk. Anybody else think this is about the dumbest thing they've ever heard of?

yeah....I simply cannot get my head wrapped around that decision.

The only thing I can think of is that they are concerned he isnt going to be the same guy after that injury to his shoulder.

I like the Bolts quite a bit for the same reason I will cheer for the Bengals...they have been really bad much much more than they have been any good. Brees was the guy that led that turnaround in attitude and on the field.

I do believe Rivers is going to be a very good pro QB, but is that going to happen now??

At any rate, if i'm the Dolphins....Brees is the guy i would chase.

I am a huge Chiefs fan and from I have been reading in the Kansas City Star, it is impossible for the Chiefs to sign any free agents. They had to drop four players just to make it under the cap and restructure the contracts of some starters including 11 time probowl Guard Will Shields. From what Carl Peterson is saying, it sounds like the Chiefs will be very quite during FA this off season. The Kansas City Star was speculating that when the TO rumors to KC first started after the Super Bowl that the Chiefs were just trying to force the Broncos into paying more for him. Which is probably BS. But it would be funny though.

I live in Chiefs country, so I'll keep you posted. The Star isn't as well connected as a couple of other sources I have.

That said, the salary cap was bumped by $7.5M. That makes the Chiefs players.

Here's todays story. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...s/14061032.htm

The Chiefs need to resign T-rich and Dalton. Plus they will need to sign rookies after the draft. At the end of the article Peterson talks about his offer to TO.

Where do you live? I have been down to KC alot to watch the Chiefs. I have relatives in Johnson County.

I'm in Wichita, now. Not originally from here. My sister and her husband are season ticket holders, and my mortal enemies during football season! Johnson County is one of the nicest areas in the US.

I could see Shields coming back at a reduced price to if the interest out there isn't overwhelming. He's getting up there in age and there *might* not be a lot of teams willing to pay him a ton. He's a first ballot hall of famer though, so somebody probably will.

What are they going to do with Holmes?

He can come to Denver if he wants.

In regard to the T.O. offer...that's all he's going to get from anyone, so they are in it as much as anyone. How much is the base? That'll be the deciding factor.

I get the feeling you don't care to see him in K.C. I understand and agree if that's the case. Let him be somebody else's problem.

They restructured Shields contract. So he is a Chief, probably untill he retires, which may be next week. Or hopefully after the 2006 season. It sounded like Priest's cap number was going to be high if they dropped him or not, plus he could retire as well.

What do you mean by mortal enemies? Your a Broncos fan?

Yeah, Broncos fan.

I wasn't paying attention, I thought they had released Shields...and maybe they did during the whole extension...extension...extension fiasco of last week. I know the Raiders released Kerry Collins, but he is still a Raider at the moment because of the extensions granted.

With Priest, he's not going to want to play second fiddle to Johnson and from listening to several interviews with him since the end of the season I don't think he's ready to retire.

I'm wondering what the Broncos are doing. They let Anderson go and are going to sign Dayne again. I know that Dayne is not Anderson's replacement so that must mean Shanahan will sign or draft another back. I'd welcome Holmes in Denver.

Well Owens could add something to that offence, but he's just such a damn head case. Theres no nice way to say this, but he's never had a black head coach in his days in the NFL. Perhaps a guy like Herm Edwards might get through to him and find a way to make him respect the team? Who knows really.

But the Chiefs offence struggled until week 9 last year. The turning point was that in week 9 the offensive line was fully healthy. After that the Chief offence moved the ball at will on pretty much everyone. So really how much more do you want to improve the offence? Than again Herm isn't Vermeil, and Al Saunders is no longer the offesive co-ordinator. Still the first thing I'd do is try to keep the offensive line in tact, or ensure that the right personell is in place there before I looked anywhere else. And of course I'd be fixing that defence before trying to improve offensive personell too.

I wonder if Green Bay may not take a look at TO.

At this point, I would say its almost likely IF Favre returns, if not then they wont.

Jevon Walker has drawn his line in the sand and will never wear a GB uniform again, so they have to find a replacement.

While I'm a little suprised the Chargers let Brees walk, I understand their position. As far as I know, no QB has ever come back 100% from a torn labrum. I had this surgery about 5 yrs ago, and I'm sure glad it's on my off-shoulder as it is no where near 100% for flag football (and I'm sure a hack like me puts nowhere near the stress on the joint that an NFL QB does).

Also, I think Brees is a system QB who will be barely above average on a team without LT and Antonio Gates. Someone will overpay Brees tremendously and be very disappointed with his perfomance, IMO. (That said, I'd love to see Detroit pick him up and see what Martz could do with the talent on O there. I think Martz will be brilliant again now that he's no longer the head guy.)

I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying no QB has ever come back from that injury/surgery. Brian Griese had the exact same injury 4 or 5 years ago.

Has Griese been the same since? IIRC, he was one of the top-rated QB's in the league before he started having shoulder problems, and has been bounced around the league since then. Maybe the shoulder problem, maybe personality, etc - who knows. I do know if you look at his stats before he was hurt vs after, it is not on the same plane.

I think Rich Gannon actually had a shoulder problem way back when with Minnesota and actually came back a better player, but I don't think it was a labrum thing.

It's hard to judge in Griese's case.

He left Denver (not his choice) because his leadership was poor. When he was the starter in Denver he had a great supporting cast. His stats were very nice.

With the Bucs he was pretty good this year, but thew a lot of picks too.

He never had a big arm, so it's kinda tough to judge whether the labrum injury changed him or not.

Actually, the CBA caused the cap to jump by an additional $7.5M. According to Don BAnks at CNNSI.com the cap jumped almost $17 Mill /team!
(from approx $85 Million to $102 Million)

I don't know if I agree with you Dis, personally I am a big Culpepper fan, I absolutely love what he brings to the table. Take a look at the running game early in the season with Culpepper and you'll notice averages around or even below in some cases 1 yard per carry. Stuff like that isn't going to cut it on an NFL team.

That team all together was playing like absolute garbage until Brad Johnson got in there. Heck, their defense didn't start playing until he got in there.

I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that it was a badly run team with Mike Tice at the helm.

However, the news to me is pretty shocking. If he lands in Miami, it instantly boosts their chances and makes them real contenders. That was the real sore spot on that team with a pretty solid running game and Defense (although it is somewhat reduced with Williams probably on the outs with his suspension).

Oakland? They seem to try and add talent without actually trying to make a team. Maybe adding Culpepper and have him tossing passes to Moss with a good #2 guy in Porter would put up some good numbers (Collins is a pile), they'd probably win a couple more games, but afterall, they are the raiders.

I could see the Jets, but I beleive they have an interest in Brees, they'd contacted them about Rivers/Brees last season and wanted the other one.

I question Culpepper's mental toughness. I don't think he recovers well from bad decisions. I think he gets frustrated easily.

No question, the Vikings running game was a detriment and that would affect any QB. I just don't think Culpepper handled it at all.

I certainly won't argue that Tice was a big part of the problem either.

Where do you think the best fit for him is Dis?

If Buffalo decides not to blow their entire team up, I think that might be a good place. They need a QB to run that team. Miami would be a good fit too.
