Default Lump on dogs belly

I know there are some knowledgable pet people here, so I figured someone might be able to offer some insight. My maltese terrier got his hair cut on the weekend, and upon coming home, my mom was able to notice a little bump a little smaller than a quarter around his belly or ribs. It is soft, almost like it is muscle, but it seems like a weird place for muscle. Does anyone have experience with something like this? We are going to take him to the vet to get it checked out regardless, but the first thing that comes to mind is obviously cancer. He is 7 or 8 years old btw.

Thanks.

My 2 year old Irish terrier has the same on her ribs, I imagine it is some sort of cyst.

Did you get her checked out by the vet?

I think a lot of dogs get that. When we first got our dog we were told it was a hernia. It hasn't caused any problems in the eight years we've owned him.

Our Golden Retriever had the same thing. We took him to the vet, they said that it was most likely fat deposits but that they could take a sample and have it analyzed if it made us feel better. It went away in about a month.
They told us that if it continued to get bigger or was causing the dog discomfort to bring him back in.

I should mention that he isn't really himself right now either, but I have no reason to believe the two are related. I think he's just feeling ill as he is very quiet and somewhat lazier than usual.

Thanks for the tips guys, I hope it's nothing.

My 10 year old dog has a couple of those lumps also. They started showing up around 3 years ago...I think.

It shouldn't be anything to worry about.

I haven't taken her in but I watch to see if she is eating less or being less active. She has been like a typical terrier ever since I found the lump. Terriers are fun, she tried to go after a rottweiler yesterday.

My cocker had about 5 or so of those lumps. They were cysts and that's most likely what your dog has. Shouldn't be anything to worry about.
