Default Penguins Acheive Goal and clinch a playoff spot!!

For the first time since 2002-2003 fans will flock to the Igloo to watch
the Pens take part in the post season dance.

One year ago who would have picked the Pitsburgh Penguins to be the 5th team in the entire CPHL to clinch a playoff spot? Better yet who would have picked them to make the playoffs at all? Not very many people.

At the end of the 2004-05 CPHL season the Penguins sat in the basement of the entire league with a miserable 50 points. Today with 7 games still remaining in the regular season the Penguins sit in 3rd place in the Gretzky conference and in 5th in the entire CPHL with 98 points, just win win shy of doubling there point total from a season ago, and just 5 points away from shattering the franchise record of 102 points.

At the end of last years CPHL season GM Goffie made it clear he has one goal in mind and that goal is to make the playoffs. The new look team looked to be a team on the bubble that might be able to pull together enough points to squeak in as the #8 seed. But after many trades the much improved Pens are battling for home ice advantage in the extremely tough Gretzky conference with just over two weeks left in the regular season.

The 05-06 Penguins have already shattered most peoples expectations and with a forward brass that contains the likes of Markus Naslund, Peter Forsberg, Alexei Kovalev and Ilya Kovalchuk, this is a team that could turn some heads in the playoffs.

But in the words of GM Goffie: " We have already acheived all expectations, anything else that we accoplish will be a bonus"

Only time will tell how ready this Penguins team is for the postseason, something that has been used to seperate the contenders from the pretenders for many years!!

Yeah, you've really done a great job with the Penguins. I can barely remember your old roster but I think you had Pavel Datsyuk and Stanislav Chistov as your two best players. Now you have Kovalchuck, Forsberg, Naslund, and Kovalev up front along with a lot of other good players.

IIRC I think you have Axel to thank for a trade where you made your team a lot better in one deal! But you don't turn around a team with just one trade, I think you've worked pretty hard to build a really goood team that required a lot of good trades to get you where you are.

and the daily dosage of shot at Axel, hehe. Hope the Devils get good, it would be interesting to see a devils/flames final someday if your both around.

Another year...and the Flames will be the doormat team of the CPHL. Axel ruined the Devils, he'll ruin the Flames.

The difference between me and Axel is that I'm well aware that when I was in Edmonton that I inherited a great team and gave props to my predecessing GM. Axel fails to realize that he's still riding on T99's coattails.

I'm sad you're not going to make it to Red Deer on Sunday. I wanted to see you snap Hamrahan style and come after someone on your own team.

Excellent work Goffie - You've done a terrific job - I will gladly hand over the title of the league's top GM at the year end awards banquet. In addition, to building a great team, your contributions with game reports and articles are appreciated.
