So, what are the important dates of this summer? When are we running the off season tournament/exhibition games? What type of cap will we be dealing with?

The playoffs are of no concern for the Canadiens.

Ducks squeeze out a point in a game with the Islanders ending in a 2-2 draw.

After a lackluster start with the Ducks only getting one shot on net all hell broke loose during the first period intermission with Geoff Sanderson throwing sticks around the room asking his teammates what was going on and that things had better change by the time the second period started.

Leading by example Sanderson netted his 40th goal of the year to start the comeback. Later in the third period he added an assist to Williams tying goal. As a result Sanderson was named the 1st star for his efforts.

The team is now shooting to take over the Predators into at least 4th place before the season is over.

HURRICANES WIN, ISLES TIE

Tomas Vokoun ponders during a break in play Wednesday night.

UNIONDALE, NY - The game started well as Paul Kariya scored in the opening 18 seconds of the first period but the Islanders couldn't hold on to the lead surrendering two answered goals giving them only one point.

It hasn't happened much this season, but on Wednesday night, the Nassau Memorial Coliseum was sounded with boos at the closing buzzer as the fans saw their home team throw away a 2-0 lead in a game where the two points was almost a must, settling for a single point instead.

After Paul Kariya opened the scoring only 18 seconds in rifling a hard shot through the legs of Anaheim goaltender Roberto Luongo, Jaroslav Svoboda scored on the powerplay tallying only his 2nd of the season, lifting a rebound over a fallen Luongo.

The Islanders dominated the Ducks in the opening frame, outshooting the visitors by a 12-1 margin, building up the 2-0 lead, but like some say, a 2-0 lead in hockey is one of the worst leads to have.

Geoff Sanderson notched his 40th of the season in the second period at 9:25 deflecting a Jason Williams shot through the legs of Tomas Vokoun, and Williams himself would score his 15th of the season in the third to tie the game at two goals apiece sending the game to an extra overtime period.

Overtime solved nothing as the Islanders were the only ones to fire any shots on net, and the game ended with each team skating away with a point.

Coupled with Carolina's win Wednesday over the Montreal Canadiens, the Islanders' playoff light continue to dim as they face the remainder of their schedule realizing they must not only win most of their remaining games, but have the Hurricanes lose the majority of theirs. Not an easy task considering the Hurricanes are in the midst of a three-game winning streak.

The Isles will get three days off to prepare for the final stretch before they face the Senators in Ottawa on Sunday.

Gut Check Time

As all eye’s were on Carolina Wednesday night as the Hurricanes put forth one of their best efforts to date and managed to hold of the Canadiens and increase their strangled hold on the 8th and final playoff spot in the East.

Alex Tanguay opened the scoring for the Canadiens when he slipped a shot under the sprawled out David Aebischer. The goal gave Tanguay his 21st of the season and put the Canadiens in the lead midway through the 1st. Rick Nash got the Hurricanes on the board when he took a breakaway pass for the gifted playmaking center Doug Weight. Sean Hill responded minutes later as the Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead heading into the 1st intermission.

Both teams came out flying for the 2nd period of play but strong goaltending and tight defensive play by both teams kept the score at 2-1 as the 2nd period came to a close. Unlike the 1st and 2nd periods the 3rd period was owned by the Hurricanes and the Canes took it to the Canadiens in the final period of play as Sean Hill added his second of the night as well as Wayne Primeau getting into the scoring as the Hurricanes toppled the Canadiens by a score of 4-1.

The Hurricanes now sit alone in the 8th spot of the Gretzky Conference 7 points up on the trailing Islanders and 8 on the Canadiens with only 8 games left in the season. The Hurricanes faceoff once more against the Canadiens on their second last game of the season

Another day, another one goal loss. Early goals by Svitov and Fritsche in the first 2 minutes of the third had us thinking comeback but that was as far as we got. Oh well only 5 games left until this misery sort have ends.

Senators clinch a playoff spot for the second year in a row

Thanks to a 2-1 victory of the lightning. it wasnt pretty but it works.

The Senators scored all the goals the needed to in the first period. Ryan Smyth netted his 33rd of the year. Assists to Parros(now 9 points in 10 games) and Nedved.

Joe Thornton scored his 40th goal of the year as well(Stajan and Boynton chipped in with the helpers.

Turco came to within 10 seconds of netting his 7th shut out of the year but was foiled Brown.

The win gives us 98 points on the year 5 points shy of there team record 103 from last year. Its also gives us 46 wins. which ties the team recored for wins in a season also done last year.

We will now enjoy a 3 day break before we face the Islanders .

A great chance to reset some weary bodies after playing 6 games in 6 nights.

Jarko has strong debut as Caps down Nords:

Jarko Ruutu scored 1 goal, had 7 hits and 2 pim while playing for 20 minutes in his first game as a Capital. His strong debut lead the Capitals to a win. Valteri Filpulla scored his first ever CPHL goal.

The capitals play 4 games before the trade deadline to finish out the season, but then do not play after.

The Capitals could end the season anwhere from 27th to 31st place and it is widely speculated the the Caps may move their pick near teh draft.
