I just returned from watching the Tragically Hip play their first concert in their hometown of Kingston in over ten years.

There were about 25,000 at the outdoor event at the Royal Military College (BTW, what ever happened to WessThompson?) and it was an awesome show. It was a charity event called Across the Causeway and also featured Matt Good, the Trews, Hugh Dillon, and others. It was also hosted by Dan Ackroyd, who joined the Hip in their first of two wicked encores to play harmonica during "Locked in the Trunk of a Car". Doug Gilmour and Kirk Muller also made appearances.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that it was an awesome experience of Canadiana and that everyone can expect an upcoming full-fledged tour from them soon.

Great stuff Icarus.

Hopefully you are right about a big tour coming up soon, I can't wait to see them again.

Locked in the Trunk of a Car is a great song live. It was never a favourite of mine until I seen them do it live. It is a creepy song live with Gord screaming etc. Great stuff.

Very cool ic. Hugh Dillon eh? How was he?

I haven't enjoyed their last two disks at all but I would pay to see them again, just as I paid for the last two albums (actually, Music at Work didnt really shake my coconuts either but at least there were a couple servicable songs on that album). I dont mind making my financial contribution to them for how much enjoyment I have gotten out of the band over the years.

The shows at the Jube a few years back were by far the best Hip shows I have ever seen. It was as if the Hip of 93 was suddenly reborn for a couple of concerts in the middle of what I would call creative stagnation. When they played Long Time Running as the first song of the last encore during the first show I was possibly the happiest I have ever been. Three rows away, watching Gord and finally hearing that song live was pure euphoria.

I had the pleasure of meeting them all (excpet Gord) at the Back Alley in 98 and they were all great guys. They even got on stage and played a song with some band from the East they knew. Another favorite time.

He was terrible. Didn't play any Headstones songs and the ones he did sing didn't sound great. Not impressive. The Trews on the other hand were fantastic; I'd recommend seeing them if they come to town. Very talented musicians.

I saw the Trews at Nashville North - those guys had so much energy, played an awesome set. For their encore they must have played back to back Led Zepplin for 45 minutes. 'twas great. Maybe they'll open for the hip (wishful thinking).

It's their hometown and this was the first concert in ten years? WTF? They do cross-Canada tours every couple years it seems...amazing.

Great stuff! One of the guys at work went to the show they did at the Whiskey here a couple of months ago and said it was absolutely amazing. I was kicking myself for missing their Jube shows a few years back (I think I was on vacation or something) I'd love to see them in a similar venue. Their new disc is really growing on me, have a few more listens, Kevan.

The new disc I loved instantly. In Violet Light took me a couple listens, but In Between Evolution is a great record. Gus, and Vaccination Scar are classic hip songs.

The Jude shows two years ago were awesome. Smaller venue and a big stage for Gord to roam around and do his thing. One hilarious moment is during a guitar rift (on which song I forget) Gord Downie thrusts his shoulders back and yells out into the mic "Chad Kroeger" Imitating the power stance that the guys from Nickleback do, hilarious.

Yeah... apparently there is no good venue here in Kingston. But I think they are opening a new arena and the Hip said they'd be happy to be the first act to perform there if invited. But maybe it'll be Avril.

Locked in the Trunk... was actually a song that grew out of their live shows...I remember hearing Downie break into that song in an interlude of New Orleans (I think it was) during the Road Apples tour , and then a few years later I was happy to see it on its own right on an album

I whole-heartedly agree.

Was not huge into Music @ Work and In Violet Light....however, the new cd is great. I don't exactly why, or what it is, but I really quite good.

The leadoff song is quite good....written for Dan Synder, right?

I vaguely remember that as well. Were you at the Silver Dollar Action Centre for that concert? What a freaking circus that was.

What's cool is I don't think Locked is the only song to start out that way. Some time ago now someone gave me a bootleg cd which had a verion of New Orleans is Sinking on it, and right inbetween the song an early version of Nautical Disaster. Cool stuff.

They actualy did that with alot of songs. The song would be in its beginning stages and they would fit the 'song under construction' into a jam during a regular song. New Orleans was one they used alot to test ones out. 100th Meridain was another. I think that bootleg Adam was Roxy. By the way, did you get my PM?

EDIT: I thought I'd add that Locked is one of my favorite hip songs. I have a pre-demo copy of Fully Compeltely and the beginningversion of Locked is quite differnet than what came out. Gord said in an interview at the time that the idea for Locked came from his own life. He said "You know that feeling when you have something really good and you screw it all up (in reference to a relationship)? That feeling is the same as being locked in the truck of a car." Just some interesting Hip trivia.

I believe that was Highway Girl, the whole double suicide foolery live version ("That's my story, and I'm sticking to it")... although he may have also used it during New Orleans is Sinking.

Just noticed it. I don't have the PM pop-up option on (or if I do it doesn't work) so I sometimes don't notice them. Will get back to you asap.

yup. I have that bootleg too. I remember hearing both Nautical disaster and Trunk of a Car a few times live (I saw the Hip too many times to count from ~90-92) prior to hearing them on an album..and Kevanguy's right, New Orleans was often the song that would be morphed into either of these
