Default Medal #15 - Surprise Gold (spoiler obviously)

Quote:
Chandra Crawford of Canada has won the gold medal in the Olympic women's cross-country sprint event in Turin, Italy. The 22-year-old Canmore, Alberta native took the lead from Germany's Claudia Kuenzel at about the halfway mark, then powered through the final sprint to finish ahead of Kuenzel, who took the silver medal.

Yay, awesome!

I don't how much this was surprise gold, but moreso the surprise was that if a Canadian was going to win it, it would have been the other skiier (think Beckie Scott).

Too bad Beckie couldn't have squeaked in for some sort of medal...4 skiiers in the race, 2 of them Canadians I think!

Canada has also finished 4th nine times now. If only a couple of those 4th place finishes could have moved up at least one spot...

The 22-year-old is in just her second year on the national team and her previous best finish on the World Cup circuit was 10th earlier this season. She was 46th at the world championships last year.
Way to go! Hopefully we didn't dope.

Watching the exuberance this girl had on the podium and her belting out "O Canada" was quite moving. Gave quite the bubbly interview to CBC too.

Was probably far more heartfelt than any potential ceremony for the Men's Hockey team.
