Default Is it Turin or Torino?

People use two names for the city. I just read the Herald and they used "Turin," while CBC uses "Torino."

Is there a reason why?

Was it renamed a while back or something?

Quite right. I did exchange for 6 months in Torino. Nice city, but the mountains are spectacular.

Some of the main attractions are the Shroud of Turin and the Film Musium.

If you go to Itlay make sure you take a couple of days to visit this city.

And BTW - Milan = Milano Rome = Roma Florence = Firenze etc...

Last night while watching CBC I only heard them all use "Turin"...

Some lady on Jack was all whipped up yesterday about it...said it should be Turino..

Whatever.

Florence and Venice are my favourite cities in Italy. Loved them both. Never did go to Turin though....

It's Turin.

If the Olympics were in Rome would we call them the Roma Games? Don't think so.

TURIN.

When in Rome do as the Romans do....they call it Roma.

Point is..one is the Italian way and one is the English way of saying it. Take your pick! Neither is wrong.

I'll disagree, evman. Quite a hint of arrogance there.

It's Turino. It's in Italy, the Italians called it Turino, thus the city's name is Turino.

We might call it Turin, but the real name is Turino.

Why do we call Germany "Germany"?
They call it "Deutchland"

I'm shocked and dismayed, and appauled!! You know the old expression, "when in Calgary, do as the Calgarians do"

...actually to be perfectly honesnt I dont give two craps how they refer to Calgary. I'd laugh if someone told me they were ever offended by that. Actually Calgario's got nice ring to it. Maybe we should get ol Bronco on the horn and get him to look into changin that. The Calgario Flamios...I LIKE it!!!

We call them China and Japan. That's perfectly fine and I have no problem with it. But their real names given to them by the people of that area are (whatever the hell you said) and (whatever the hell you said).

But maybe I will start calling them that...I'll let you know.

Either is acceptable. It seems that "Torino 2006" is the official name of the games, but (in English) the games are being held in Turin, Italy - if that makes any sense.

If you go to the official English website for the games ( http://www.torino2006.org ), they refer to the games as a whole as "Torino 2006", but in any reference to the host city, it's always "Turin".

I believe this is the format that the CBC is using as well. NBC, on the other hand, is only using the name Torino - which adds to the confusion for those of us in Canada who can watch both the CBC and NBC coverage.

I read that the head of NBC Sports visited Turin at some point and decided that he liked the name Torino, so he declared that's what NBC was going to call the city in their coverage.

Speaking of the official site for the games, if you go there now, this is the first picture you'll see...

Crazy Canadian chicks, and bewildered Italian men.
