Minister of Public Safety - Stockwell Day.
They should have put him in charge of the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology.
Next time there's a big snowstorm in Toronto, he'll deny them army troops because they had it coming from God for not electing Tories.
Jeezus, I could go on forever.

Anyone else see that the public works minister is an unelected advisor of Harper's and not a sitting MP? Didn't Harper promise to put an end to cronyism? Geez, the guy's barely on the job for an hour and already he's giving political favours to his buddies...

I think I read somewhere that Harper won't be having a deputy PM at all.

Well Im not a big fan of this appointment either, but he is a lifelong PC who is from Montreal, an area that needs some representation in the Cabinet since they went completely Non-Con in the elections.
I hope there really is Senate reform as this just illustrates how much its goofy. Until that happens though, it will be done as it always has....this is example one of what will be plenty.

well I was SUPPOSED to keep this under wraps but... once I finish school in May I'll be appointed the new Deputy PM. Steve (we're on a first name basis) said to me that he wants someone vastly more intelligent than anyone else in Parliament to be his deputy, and someone who's amazingly HAWT to get the young female vote so next election he'll get a majority. Also the East Coast perspective means he should be picking up more seats out here, as let's face it, as good as Peter MacKay is... he's no me

Yep, there's no Deputy. So what's head of Government if Harper is incapcitated?

I'd guess whoever he taps on the shoulder to be interim leader or be the deputy at that time. If he dies I'm sure the GG will just ask the party to appoint an interim leader at that time. I don't think it's too big of a deal.

I like a number of the appointment. Putting a former General in charge of Defense sounds like a great idea.

There's a couple things about this cabinet I don't like at all...
1. Never liked when people cross the floor to get a cushy job... just wrong. Probably not the last defection, but another one that I don't particularly like.
2. Never, ever should one appoint a non-MP to cabinet. I don't care who you think you are impressing by it, its just ridiculous.
3. Stockwell Day... there's better people than him in the party, like Ablonczy... don't like the fact he got a position cause he's a failed former leader.

Harper's getting a lot of heat for being hypocritical. The whole platform against cronyism ends up with an elected liberal crossing the floor and offered a cozy cabinet job, choosing power over party before he's even sat in his seat...and then an unelected citizen being brought into cabinet also via Senate appointment (made easier if elected if Senate Election bill passes).

personally I have no problem with cabinet ministers not being in the House of Commons, in theory anyway.
You're in charge of the department, but any real decisions or changes need to be passed through Parliament, including the Senate. We've had 2 Prime Ministers who were Senators, and I can think of atleast one Prime Minister that wasn't in Parliament whatsoever (which was recent). However it's preferable that they are elected to the House of Commons.
The floor crossing for a cabinet position, seems very ummmm.... "Liberal-esque" looking at it from the perspective of this board.
