Default Question for a medical professional

I'm not sure how many doctors are on CP but I'll ask anyway:

What are the odds of identical twins both having an intracranial (frontal lobe) arteriovenous malformation?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

First off I'm not a doctor (although I sometimes play one........... uh nevermind)

But after looking at the condition on Web MD, it looks like this is something that happens during the pregancy. Because identical twins have the same genetics, and are exposed to the exact same environment during gestation, I would say that if one gets it odds are both will have it.

Now, is your question based on knowing one has it, what are the odds of both ending up getting it? Or is it a simple question of what are the odds out of all identical twin births for this to happen?

I have friends who are twins, 21 years old, and one of them recently had an arteriovenous malformation successfully removed but it was rather serious and his neurosurgeon asked that the other twin have an MRI to determine if he has it too. Wondering what the chances are...

Thanks though, I appreciate the insight.

Why doesn't the 2nd twin just go ahead and have the MRI to determine whether he has the malformation or not?

That would be the easy answer

Well... here is the answer i got:

Quote:
Most of these develop in fetal or early newborn life so I would imagine that there would be an increased incidence in identical twins but not sure of the actual percentage risk.
Said it was a good question, and that it was really hard to find any percentage. Hope that helps in anyway...
