Support for Quebec independence drops after election
Support for sovereignty dropped in Quebec in the immediate aftermath of the Conservative election victory that included a breakthrough in the province, according to a new poll.
The poll by the Montreal-based CROP firm for Montreal La Presse newspaper suggested the number of Quebeckers who supported an independent Quebec dropped to 34 per cent after the federal election from 43 per cent prior to the Jan. 23 federal election.
Coincidence?

Nope...just shows how disenfranchised they felt with Liberals stealing the money that was to be used to promote federalism.
Now they have an alternative to Liberals or seperation.

Yep, I think Harper would gladly sign the release forms if they still want to seperate.

Why?
That would be contrary to everything he said during his campaign.

I just don't see Harper as the type to bend over backwards to appease Quebec. And I think he would call Quebecs bluff, or at least that seems to be the perception from Quebec anyway.

Dont see it.
He needs the Bloc to push through any legislation that the Libs wont support.
He is a federalist, not a seperatist and as PM will do what he can to hold the country together IMO.

Well actually Harper believes in giving the provinces the keys to running the jurisdictions they are supposed to have and getting rid of the interference the federal government runs. He wants to give the provinces the responsibilities and powers they are supposed to have. He wants to bring the provinces to the table to figure out the solutions. These are the things Quebecers have been asking for.

We can't trust any story that the Commie news papers break about politics. This is just another attempt by Globe to scare people away from the Conservatives and back to their Liberal buddies.

There's a lot of common ground between the west and Quebec, though an unfortunate rift has developed between the two regions for about the last 35 years. If Harper can build a coalition between the two regions, it could make him less of a Clark and more of a Dief. I think Harper understands that the forces that make the west feel like they're being pushed to the fringe of confederation are the same forces that stir separatism in Quebec. Accountability, parlimentary reform, energy policy that respects the producers, agricultural sustainability measures, and increased provincial powers are all in the best interests of Quebec and Alberta.

This is good news. Canada with Quebec is a better country than without. They help temper some of the anglocentricity of this nation.
One thing though. Don't confuse support for the Bloc as approval for separation. Many people who support the Bloc only do so because it is a party that they feel will help their province within confederation. Many would not vote for separation in referendum.

I'm not saying it's a dirty word, or that there is anything wrong with speaking English. What I am saying is that it is nice to have Quebec's influence on our overall national culture. Without Quebec, we are just an average run-of-the-mill British colony. Boring.
The only country I can think of that would be happy being 100% Anglocentric is ... England!

Without Quebec, a giant drain on the national purse is removed. I think I could live without half my cereal box being in french.
That said, Quebec is an important part of Canada, but the province does not bring unparalleled prestige to this nation.
