Default Motorola Rokr

My contract with Telus has finally ended and I've been researching cell phones for the past few months before I get a new one. So far from all the phones i've read reviews on the Rokr has the most favorable reviews. I'm still a student so I can't really spend too much on a phone. I'm hoping someone here who has or has had the phone can give me their opinions on it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Wait until the new Rokr comes out. The first one is pretty bad. Artificial limit of 100 songs regardless of how much you expand the phone and you are locked into their interface for getting new music OTA (over the air) as well as playing your music. You can't set iTunes tracks as ringtones. Syncing is dog slow. The interface is pretty bad, and the camera is VGA resolution only. The stereo channels are apparently reversed too.

Definitely don't want to jack the thread... What I do want ot do is pose another question while people are thinking about sell phones.

I'm away from Canada for awhile. I'm currently paying Rogers 30 bucks a month so that I can keep my phone number. More specifically, I'm subscribing to the lowest possible plan. That's the best they can do. Does anyone know of a company that I can switch my phone to that will transfer my old number, and allow me to get onto a pay as you go type plan? I'm using zero minutes per month, and am happy to pay 10 or 15 bucks just to keep the number (voicemail would be good too).

Anyone...

And again, hope this doesn't jack the thread... They are sorta related, right?

I've got the Motorola e815 on Bell. It's got a built in MP3 player, 1.3mp Camera, and the ability to slap in a TransFlash card for 512MB of MP3/picture storage. Using the TF card you can move your own MP3's onto the phone with zero limitation, thereby not having to pay Bell to get music onto your phone to get pictures off.

The v710 Telus has isn't quite the same but I think they're due to get some new phones, including the e815 in a bit.

It's a little big though.

Unfortunately, I believe you are currently S.O.L.

Canadian cell companies do not provide number portability, so if you want to keep the number you have to stay with the same company.

On Dec.20 the CRTC ruled that cell companies must require operators to allow customers to keep their number when switching to other plans, but that doesn't come into affect until Mar.17, 2007 link

American companies have been forced to allow portability for a couple years now. It is stupid that it would take Canadian carriers so long to allow the same thing, it's not like they are reinventing the wheel.

I've heard a few folks also praise the e815

I've got Rogers down to $12.45 a month so they can go lower than that. In fact I just opened my bill and I'm in arrears by a month. My new bill is $26.91 with taxes and late charges. Their customer service people aren't afraid of lying I've noticed -- they made up all sorts of crap when I needed a replacement phone. Give the guy the pressure. Say "I know someone who has a deal for 12 bucks a month so I know you can go lower".

4X4- are you still on a contract? If not I was wondering if you could convert the phone to "Pay as you go" and entrust a buddy to top up the phone with a new $10 card every month.

And if you think he might forget- set up a re-occuring appointment for him in his Outlook.

My cousins have the same phone. The thing with Bell is that the reception is poor at home. My dad has had two phones with Bell and has had the same problem with both, he can use it in most places but at home.

Telus has the best reception and always will (they own the towers), but other providers have nicer phones. In the end I am most concerned about coverage and telus has this one hands down. The pricing is a non factor, it's a few dollars difference between companies.

I have the Motorola v710 and it's feature rich (1.3mp camera, mobile tv, mp3 player etc..) but it's battery life sucks. I have to recharge it every second day. If battery life is a concern I'd recommend to look at a different phone.

You probably won't be able to convert it, as we don't have number portability. So you won't be able to move the number to a different company, or to Pay as you Go.

However, Telus has 'vacation disconnect' which costs $8.95 + GST/month, and basically you keep the number active, but no features. (No voicemail either, so that sucks.) The biggest issue is that you're gone for so long. Our limit is 6 months/year.

Glad to see that the thread wasn't derailed... Thanks for the input on my question. I'm definitely going to use the "I know of someone" thing.

As for the contract, I'm pretty sure mine has expired because I know I'm eligible for a hardware upgrade.

****in rogers. I've been using them for 10 years. Thats right, 10 years. Of course, I doubt there is a column on their screen that shows years of loyalty. I'm just another nickle in their pocket.

Maybe it's time to give up the number. I've heard horror stories from people about rogers, but I've never had any problems. The coverage is fine. the rates are comparable. It's all about keeping the number for me.

Canada is naziville when it comes to phones. In europe, you buy a sim card for 5 euro and you can put it in whatever phone you want. Then you just go to a tobacco store and buy outgoing minutes whenever you need them. Very convenient.

Telus would know how long you've been with them.

Of every major nation I've been in, Canada has the worst cell phone service, hands down.

No I'm not right, I don't know. In fact I talked to a Rogers person about doing exactly that and they wouldn't tell me if it was possible, which makes sense because it only meant that I'd be ditching them for an even cheaper "plan" of my own.

I don't care about ditching my number though so that's not a consideration for me.

Consider Canada's land mass and population and you'll know why they have poor cell service. However, Telus Mobility is still ranked the #1 carrier and all of North America.
