Favourite live song vs album version?
The other music threads got me wondering about this. It doesn't matter if you saw it live in concert, or was recorded live, but what song can you think of that the live version has that extra life that you just don't hear on the studio album?
For myself, I can immediately come up with 2.
Run Like Hell by Floyd. I always loved the tune, but on TV saw them play at the end of one of the British music festivals. It was raining, the mud was everywhere, it had just gotten dark, but when the first chords were struck the crowd went ballistic and the band seemed to use that to take the song to the next level. Rain falling through the beams of light, croud going nuts, Gilmour giving it his all. It just all came together.
Born to Run by Springsteen. Listening to it off the live boxset he released back in '85 (?), I am just grabbed by the energy. Listening to the original studio version now sounds subdued. Whenever I hear the live version, I just feel the energy coming out of the speakers. Amazing.

That would be Of Promises Broken [6-30-90] Knebworth
To simply put it, I would take and live version over a studio copy any day… there’s just no comparison. But for the sake of adding to the thread I’ll jot down a couple memorable performances
1987-09-25 – Last Echoes
Echoes - Just as the titled says, this recording is the last time that Pink Floyd ever played the masterpiece. It was during this ’87 tour that David decided to drop this from their set list due to today’s crowds no longer became a good backdrop for the song due to the cheering. Although not my most preferred recording of this song, it still is one of my favorites.
1994-05-14 – And The Bell Tolls
Comfortably Numb – Is said to be David’s own choice as best guitar solo he ever had and when listening this recording, I would be hard pressed to find another to disagree with that statement..
1970-1971 - The BBC Archives
Green is the Colour – Much of the later recordings became longer jams but I still prefer this simple version, done in the intimate surroundings of the BBC studio. Gilmour’s voice is still undeveloped but has gaining the confidence that would soon become the voice of Floyd.
1971-10-? – Pompeii
A Saucerful Of Secrets – late during the 71 tour and the pre-dark side recording this song really started to take on life from a not so well idea from their studio recording. The end passage is one of my favourite movements from all the Pink Floyd recordings.
Maybe I’ll post some more later, but these are a couple I particularly enjoy.

That would be it! Awesome, thanks. I recall seeing it, then hearing it again on the radio on the way to a massive Canada Day party. Now to see if I can dig up that footage somewhere.

I've got a copy of an acoustic version of "Give to Live" by Sammy Hagar on my PC at home.
Just him and and a 6 string recorded live in concert somewhere. Incredible rich sounds and playing that is far better that the electric version on his CD.

New Orleans is Sinking by the Tragically Hip.
Any live version of New Orleans is Sinking is awesome, but none come close to "The Killer Whale Tank" version.

The live version of Float On by Modest Mouse is much better than album version.
I believe the live version was recorded on Kilborn.

Creping Death by Metallica
The added music and chanting in the middle, the audience participation, the full on energy. Have it on a live disk and was also lucky enough to have them play it for me live (goin crazy on the floor!) before they kicked the habit and still had some life in them.

A Passage to Bangkok from the 2112 studio album pales in comparison with Rush's live version from "Exit Stage Left"

Yea, love that intro where the crowd has no idea what the hell they're playing.... After 40 seconds or so, they morph into the classic intro tune and the crowd goes nuts. Great.

I thought of another:
About a Girl by Nirvana on the Sliver/Dive EP.
It's definitely the best version out of all of them.
