Default Thinking about going VOIP for home phone

Anyone using a VOIP company? I think I am going to make the switch. Primus and Vonage seems to be the main ones out there. I would like to hear some experiences and opinons.

I don't have VOIP personally, but I have had a number of clients call and tell me they can't dial Canadian 1-800 numbers because they aren't loaded properly into their systems, or the system is telling them to dial long distance to what should be a local number. They are American companies and don't have themselves set up properly yet for Canadian usage. Not to say you shouldn't do it, just keep in mind the growing pains.

I've got Primus. Customer service sucked when I first got it (had to hold for a while to get anyone... maybe 15 minutes?) but they sent a notice saying they were addressing that. The price can't be beat, quality is perfect probably 95% of the time. You can't dial international long distance, and if your internet goes down you are hosed. For me it does the trick and there is no reason for me to switch, especially given the price.

Hope you dont have to call 9-1-1...

Apparently they still can't get an address on their computer with VOIP..

Or that was the problem last i heard.

Axe the home phone and go with cells, it'll be the best decision you ever make.

Have a look at this forum: http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/for...splay.php?f=50

I know I was thinking of it myself, as I have a home phone just for the heck of it. I changed my mind after reading a lot of what other people were saying.

I've had Vonage (in the US) for about a year now. The first nine months I tried to use their router and my wireless router together, and had some issues. 3 months ago, I bought vonages wireless router, and it has been great. Can't tell the difference between it and a land line. I've had maybe 2 or 3 service interruptions in 3 months, and they may have been my ISP's fault.

Be wary that high upload internet usage will make it tough to use your phone. Downloading stuff seems to have little effect. But if you are using p2p or bit torrent stuff and not throttling your upspeed, you'll have problems.

Vonage is dirt cheap in the US, and has saved us lots of money. $29/month, no fees or taxes, and free long distance to US and Canada.
