Got a light?

Summary: U of C administration to completely phase out smoking on campus

SU says banning it outright will negatively impact business at the campus run bar. Idiots. If the U of C made tuition free for everyone, they'd find a way to put a negative spin on it.

I personally welcome the idea - I like going out and not smell like smoke when I go home, plus not filling my lungs with the second hand smoke. Plus, making the Den a non-smoking bar might attract more people who don't like smoky bars?

Lakehead here in Thunder Bay also just started a campus wide smoking ban. I love it! And my smoking friends complained initially, but now are trying to quit. That's the main benefit of all of this. If someone can't smoke, they are more likely to quit.

I am not a smoker, but the no smoking might attract some non-smokers, but drive away smokers.

Dont know if it will increase business at the Den, it might bring it down.

No kidding - I don't like staying in a smoky bar for a long time. but banning it outside, well i don't really care that much (nothing like stepping outside and getting a good wiff of smoke in your face). It's not like it's a new thing either though(see McMahon stadium, that ######ed patio law etc), so the U is just going with the trends, and getting ahead of what the city is planning, it seems.

The patio law is a stupid. "Excuse me sir, can you take that cigarette inside please? Thank you."

Yikes, they should ban those beat up volvos that hippies drive that spew out pounds of smoke per hour. [/b][/quote]
That drives me crazy as well.

To take it a little further -- you can't smoke on a patio on 17th Ave, meanwhile Joe Hyroller is driving by in his Ford Exhibition pumping out poison at a fantastic rate. The strolling yuppies can't stand smoke from cigarettes, but a nice dose of carbon monoxide into Jr's baby-jogger is a-ok.

I don't smoke (mostly).

Just to take THAT a bit further

If you want to stay outside and smoke, you can just go on the sidewalk outside the patio, with basically the same result. What a dumb law.

I think all indoor smoking at the University should be banned. However... smoking on the balcony outside is pretty harmless.

Slight knee-jerk reaction... I'll miss smoking a victory cigar on the Black Lounge patio after final exams though.

I'm not in favor of this rule as it just gives almost 40% of the student body something else to complain about. It will also spell a large cut in business to the Den on certain nights, as well as during the day.

If the Uni wants to hurt themselves more financially, then that's their perogative. Just don't blame or point fingers at the SU, who are hard-pressed to find any other corporate sponsors. I don't support smoking as a habit, but if anyone is going to complain of a tobacco company as a sponsor, then you have to point fingers at the Molson Indy and other related sporting events as well.

40%? You think it's that high?

I don't (didn't) go to the UofC but I was there in early April and I was a little surprised about how many people were walking around with smokes. 40% seems a little high though.

On a related note, back in the 90's there was a campus bar that was officially called "The Black Lounge" but was much more commonly known as "The Black Lung" due to the smokalicious atmosphere. It might even still be there, but it ain't the "Black Lung" anymore.

On a more personal note, one time I was at the Den and a long-menthol-chain-smoking, rather irritable patron hit me with a pool-cue.

No kidding. I hope they do this, it'll be funny seeing a big parade of smokers going to and from campus in order to take a few puffs of their cancer sticks between classes.

On another related note, who was it before that said (jokingly) they were pondering the idea of running for president of the SU on the platform of completely disbanding it? I think that's the greatest idea i've ever heard. If there's one thing I learned in my first year at univeristy it's that the SU is a total waste of money and completely useless...

This has nothing to do with the schools where I am, but they did ban smoking in all bars in the new york area, but you can go outside.

The "Black Lung" wasn't a bar, it was just a lounge where smoking was allowed. It's since been taken over by the SU as part of the Den's refurbishment, and actually is a bar now... still plenty of smoking, but at least people don't go there *just* to smoke anymore. Interestingly, the Lung (my name for the "new" Black Lounge) has a patio where, by Calgary bylaws, smoking isn't allowed. The owners still allow it though... wonder if they'd give me a bribe to keep me from lodging a complaint with bylaw officers..? B)

As for the idea of a 100% ban on campus, outside and in, I'm of two minds: I think the U is within their rights to implement such a ban, and I'd be happy to see it. Most smokers are a bunch of inconsiderate d!cks who stand directly in front of doorways when smoking and then proceed to drop their butts on the ground, rather than walking 10 feet to an ashtray. However, a ban will be pointless if it's unenforceable, and it will be. The campus cowboys won't be able to do anything about it, and the cops would just laugh if someone called to complain.

I just want to add one more thing for clarity, since most people will just skim over this post without reading it...

As smoking is already banned on all Calgary Health Region facility grounds, all the grounds of the Calgary Board of Education and all Calgary Seperate School grounds it's not that ridiculous.

I've noticed at SAIT that hardly any of the dirty smokers ever actually respect the 10 metre no smoking zone on campus.

They usually smoke with 4 metres of the door and you have to walk through the smoke to enter or leave the buildings.

The easiest solution is to ban smoking outright on campuses so that non-smokers don't have to be subjected to it.

If smokers are crying about not being able to smoke where they want to then they should think about quitting.

I really don't care if they feel like outcasts because I don't want them endangering my health.

Good. The Den is for heavy drinking, not smoking.

Well, the old Denanyways...not the "Melrose Place" Den that's opened in the last couple years

That would be me. Too bad I am way to lazy to actually carry something like that out.

As for the smoking debate, It really did p*ss me off when it was cold/rainy and all the smokers would huddle right next to the "don't smoke by the doorway" signs and I'd have to walk through them all day. Also, for the fact as suggested earlier that this may cause some people to quit. We can only hope.

I really don't see this rule being enforced though. If someone is off smoking in a bush somewhere, what is campus security going to do? "Could you put that out please sir, this is a no smoking area. Common.. please? pretty please? cheery on top? Ok, i'm calling a by-law officer, he'll be here in half an hour. Make sure you stay here so you can recieve a ticket."

As for the Den, anyone that has been there in the last 8 years may have noticed it was being invaded by chaches. Now they have the fancy shmancy id system and all, but hopefuly the chaches value smoking to keep their image cool so much that they go hang out somewhere else and start fights where they can smoke while fighting.
