The PP is pretty awful, there are no two ways about it. There are two things you need, IMO, to have an effective PP: good zone entries to set up possession, and then good movement, both of the puck and the personnel, in order to cause a breakdown in coverage. The Flames are terrible at both.

Not sure if there is much we can do about the first one, as it is a talent thing, but the movement seems pretty straight-forward. Every good PP, and seemingly most PP goals, stem from player movement that eventually opens up a lane or a zone. The Flames are way too stationary, and their passes are too mechanical and predictable.

The really frustrating thing is that EVERYONE knows this. Everyone, it seems, except the Flames.

Thought it was hilarious when I looked up how bad the PP is ... 10 years x 32 teams = 320 powerplay numbers, and the Flames were 319th!

Scored last night though!

Zary is an interesting case. I thought the effort was there. Again. He knows he needs to make plays, and he's trying. I have always been a fan of his game, and he is trying to get it back.

But I thought it was evident last night that he has lost power in his first step, and he just doesn't have the acceleration to get open or make plays right now. It is sad to watch. And I hope he can get it back, because I love his game and I love his attitude and fight.

Agreed, overall I thought he looked better last night but he lacks agility. Hopefully with more time it comes back, but he looks half a step behind in all cases, and I don't think it's because he doesn't think the game fast enough. He just can't get there.

100%

He WAS getting there, before the injuries. So it isn't that he isn't thinking the game fast enough. It's just mobility. And that being the case, it seems reasonable to think that he CAN get it back. Let's hope.

I said in the GT, but when they move the puck through Huberdeau it looks a lot better - he at least tries to find guys in a good position and he usually doesn't waste time with his passes. That said, the guys getting the pass have to move to open spots and be ready for the pass - half the time they seem surprised.

However, that was the weakest game from Huberdeau in quite a while overall.

Huberdeau is the best passer on the team, and the PP SHOULD be going through him, and yes, it looks best when it is.

He does a great job of finding the open man, but even still, they are usually standing still, so many of the passes get tipped. In a more mobile PP, his passing skills will produce.

They played him on the left sidewall yesterday, and he looked pretty good. Before they were going right side of the net or sometimes as a screen.

The Jets used to have a great powerplay where the pass would either go to Scheifele in the slot or Laine on the far side, and defenders couldn't tell which one it was going to be.

Maybe the effect of multiple knee injuries

Watching it this season, you know this powerplay is awful. But see it broken down like that? 319th out of 320? Just...wow.
