News Roundup

What NHL Edge data reveals about the Flames after 12 games

The Calgary Flames are off to their worst start in team history with a record of 2-8-2 through 12 games. There are excuses you can make for this club, but ultimately they just aren’t playing good hockey at the moment. Almost every baseline stat would back that up.

Flames' Parekh in limbo as team and fans debate best path forward

Developmental purgatory.

That, and the press box, is where Zayne Parekh sits these days.

Too good for junior, yet not quite ready for prime time.

If they think they are a playoff team then Huska and Conroy should be fired ASAP. They are doing a terrible job

I found the latest episode of the Flames very interesting with Huska coaching.

He seems like a really nice guy, but I don't see him as the type to really motivate players. I am also not sure that his strategy of "just shoot and go to the net, and hope to get lucky goals" is really a great strategy in these days. There are coaches I am sure with very advanced strategies of how to create scoring chances and our strategy is basically to try harder.

I do see the reason to keep Lomberg in the lineup as he seems like a real leader that the players look up to. Surprisingly, Backlund was vocal a few times but I can see how he is captain.

The problem with playing Huska style of offense is we really do not have a ton of crash and bang type players to play that style effectively. It would be nice to see some creativity to get players like Coronato, Parekh, Kadri, Zary some scoring opportunities.

I also found it ironic that the coaching staff preaches accountability. But in reality the accountability is only for the rookies, and the vets can do whatever they want with no repercussions. I would be frustrated if I was someone like Zary or Coronato or Parekh, just being honest.

They lack high end talent. The only guy that has it is huberdeau and he can’t do it himself. Even Kadri has never driven the offense. No coaches is going to fix that.

Time to spend the next 5 years getting some top talent, not just mediocre draft picks. Until then, enjoy losing.

I have a sneaky feeling this might actually be a - 2 points in the McKenna hunt.

So you don't see the lack of talent?

I mean nobody is suggesting Ryan Huska is the best coach in the league, or should be extended a dozen years to welcome in a dominant 5 cup run by a future Flames roster, but to think this is all on him is silly.

NHL teams have structure in their own zone, structure on a break out, structure on the backcheck (gaps) but once you're in the offensive zone it's F1, F2 F3 on pressure coverage, but other than that it's individual skill and creativity.

If you don't have the skill and creativity you get more pucks to the net.

Three things I would like to hear today:
Cooley with the start
Parekh in the lineup
Zary in the lineup

Really feels like the plan is scratch Parekh 5 games in a row so he can have 2 weeks with the Wranglers and kick the decision down the road until after US thanksgiving.

I never heard of this. True if Parekh sits 5 in a row he’s allowed a 2 week conditioning stint in the AHL?

Go Flames !

I want to see Lomberg jump into the stands and have a physical altercation with Gritty.

No more complaining that returning Parekh to junior is the wrong way to approach his development.

Just non-stop complaining about how he's deployed in every game for the remainder of the season and how that is the wrong way to approach his development.

The Flames can’t break my heart as much as last night’s WS game. I have zero expectations for this season anyway.

The Bluejays playoff was such a great distraction to how crappy the Flames have been. Now that that’s over and if the Flames continue to lose at this rate it could get pretty miserable with all the fans attention back toward them. Even for “team tank” losing is no fun.
