Mammoth 3 Flames 1
Utah 3 Flames 1
- Cooley excellent in his first start as a Flame
- Team mails it in in the middle frame and pays for it
- Calgary shorthanded 6 times
- Flames lose their fourth in a row

6 for 6 on the PK is a huge positive to take away from this game. Cooley looks like a competent back up. Hopefully we see a performance like this from him vs a better team than Utah.

considering the scenario Utah isn't bad...like if they played last night and travelled to Caglary (like that would ever happen) I would expect a Flames win. Huge advantage people seem to be just glossing over.

Cooley was fantastic.
The Utah feed is not, jittery camera with a terrible angle, topped of with brutal production in arena built for basketball. As bad as Sportsnet can be it is a bajillion times better than that crap. I've seen better bushleague junior A on flosports.
Makes me wonder what was accomplished after years at US Airways Arena only to move to an exact duplicate.

Enough whining about the schedule

Its not a back to back in Vancouver with an hour of travel. Getting in at 3am while the other team is waiting is 100% a factor...Rested vs. tired is a statistically proven advantage and this one is even worse than the usual ones NHL teams face.

Schedules tend to even out over time. Using the schedule as an excuse every 5 seconds is tiresome. We know it makes a difference. Enough already. Good teams overcome scheduling disadvantages all the time.

This Flames team is not a good team.
They are unable to overcome disadvantages in the schedule.
Looking like Bingo will be able to start weekly summaries the beginning of November.

Even good teams often falter in a tough schedule. And while it may even out over time, it hasn't evened out in this season yet. They started out with three games in 66 hours, and have had two back to backs (the last one with a late travel).
They have another 3 games in 64 hours coming up this month.

Yeah not every team deals with a back to back like that or 8pm/8pm 2pm game
Anyway the point was "they look this bad against a bubble team" comments...its not like the teams were on an even playing field. Reverse it with Utah coming from home to a waiting Calgary and I would expect a Flames win.

Give some space to people who want to discuss what happened in the game beyond the schedule. Back to backs with travel are a fact of life in the NHL.

Utah may be a bubble team but they have a lot of offensive talent when they get going. Keller is a consistent 30 goal man and Cooley, Guenther, Schmaltz, Peterka, Hayton have all scored 20+ (most of them knocking on the door for 30 pretty soon) and Crouse is not far removed from having 20 goal seasons.

The point is not the back to back - it's the entire schedule to start the season for the Flames. And IMO it affected this game.

I think his main point is that there is plenty to discuss without it being derailed to "but the schedule" EVERY. SINGLE. TIME

Sure there is. But one person mentioned it once, and someone immediatley complained. It was a factor, and I'm happy to discuss others. But the Flames' play in the first versus second sure seemed to look like fatigue kicking in to me.

I mentioned it once and it was called out so I defended my point...it was a factor. Likely should have been a take.
They played better against Vegas than Utah, probably the reason.

Thr Flames always play down too seemingly lesser opponents level and it has always been this teams weakness.
No wonder gluegun fired a stick into the stands one time and told the team how awesome they were that they didn't need to practice/ play hard.
That was thr one time I think he was right about anything as a HC
As for Huska coaching perimeter play ??? WTF?? That's this teams default when we lose and every coach knows this...<<< green text.
We've im sure all watched how this team plays when they lose and that's the #1 ingredient.
#2 lack of discipline and a dreadful PK #3 ( green text) the schedule #4 the Wideman effect and NHL bias against us -- more green .
I don't know #5 the McKenna let's tank this F er fans.....more bittchin and moaning than a 20 year happy marriage....
It's entirely possible it's too early to be complaining about a team with a serious lack of talent but I've been a Flames fan for a long time and couldn't possibly know what I'm talking about

It's not over by any means but the starting 1-4 has to be concerning to the management group (regardless of the schedule). It also is the manner in which they are losing as well. This group does not seem to have the jam and energy that last year's group did. I am not saying that it is a lack of effort but the energy is visibly less with this edition. Perhaps this team is demonstrating its lack of finish and talent that was predicted last year. Perhaps this team is in a bad funk to start the season. Time will tell.
Unless this team's core leadership gets this ship righted soon they could find themselves well out of any playoff conversation by mid-November.
Oct 18: @ Vegas - L
Oct 20: vs Wpg - L
Oct 22: vs Mtl - W
Oct 24: @ Wpg - L
Oct 26: vs NYR - W
Oct 28: @ Tor - L
Oct 30: @ Ott - L
I have trouble seeing this team being any more than 3-9 by the end of the month and such a start could already sewer their season. Yes, the schedule gets better but it is not so improved that this team can count on rattling off 7 or 8 wins in a row to catch up to this start.

Reason: Gave Flames an extra loss they didn't deserve.

Mentioned it once? I count about a dozen posts over the last 24 hours about it by the same person.
