2026 FIFA World Cup - Canada, Mexico, USA
Might be time to start discussing in a dedicated thread as we are getting closer and there is no shortage of controversy in this edition.
From The Athletic
Quote:
President Trump suggests moving 2026 World Cup games from cities he deems unsafe
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump first guaranteed that the World Cup would be “very secure,” but then suggested that he would intervene and strip host cities of matches. A reporter mentioned Seattle and San Francisco, which will host six games each, as cities that have pushed back against the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
|
I don't even think Putin and the Qatari King were this blatant about their authoritarianism. The interesting part is that Gianni will acquiesce to Trump, so this could get spicy.
In other news, mascots were revealed - of course ours is named Maple. and it's awful.
Also reminder that this is the last edition with 48 teams as the mafia family known as FIFA plans to expand to 64, then 128 in subsequent editions. There will be 12 groups of 4 teams, with Canada already seeded.

First edition with 48, future expansion is probably inevitable, but 2030 is set for 48 as well. Sucks that everything seemingly comes back to Israel now, but with UEFA likely giving them the boot from qualifying (even though they won't qualify, anyway), could totally see Trump and Co going full tyrant to force Israel into the tournament, which would hopefully lead to a boycott. I know Canada is co-hosting, but this is a US American tournament, so hopefully it's a catastrophic failure.

I was being cheeky with the 48 team comment because I'm cynical and I think for Saudi they'll bump it up to 64.
Never thought about the Israel thing, but you could be right. That would be insane if Gianni and Trump just placed them.

If UEFA does give them the boot, I fully expect they'll be in CONCACAF before long.

I fully expect the winning team will be forced to wear MAGA hats during the trophy presentation

And then pretend to host the trophy during the celebrations, as Agent Orange will likely steal that one too

Politics and FIFA aside, and even though it’s not the same 24 team tourney of decades ago, and a lot has changed with respect to sport and soccer as a business and players no longer playing mostly domestically as opposed to being top players in foreign leagues, it’s still the prestige of the World Cup in our own backyard.
18 year old me was at Commenwealth in 1994 to see star studded and eventual 94 champion Brazil actually choose to play Canada in a WC tuneup. It was a big deal for such a top team to play our minnow team, in our country no less. Up to that point you just have seen Brazil through all the clips from past World Cups they were shown on TV or the odd clip that may make it to TSN. They, and all WC teams, had a reverence and presence. Canada didn’t have that nor did they for most of my time growing up. Too young to appreciate 1986 when it happened, but playing soccer from 6 on and through those formative teenage year at that point appreciate how good other countries were and how challenged Canada was. Like the Olympics, the World Cup was something special, highly anticipated, something that happened once every 4 years. Scrape away all the other noise and cynicism about aspects of the business side, and it still is special.
Didn’t make it anywhere in the US for 1994 (closest games to Calgary I think were Stanford) but played in a big tournament in the US that summer as it was going on. There was a buzz about being in a country while the WC was going on. At the time it seems really cool to have these teams you’ve just seen in grainy clips, or watching previous World Cup or videos of past world cups, come to play in North America.
Now it’s back. Again, the game has globalized and the mystery and innocence and prestige and all that have somewhat diminished as soccer and sport aren’t the same as they were (toss the aura of the Olympics in there too) but it’s still a World Cup and Canada hosting as part of the world stage, and it’s really cool that I and my soccer playing daughter have the ability to drive 11h to see a World Cup game in person. Sure it helps that Canada is, after all these decades of being not a part of those World Cups for 36 years has a decent chance to make some noise, but even if they weren’t, it still a spectacle to want to be part of and engaged in when it’s in your own backyard.

Resigned myself to the fact that I'll be watching this at the pub a while back. Still gonna enjoy the hell out of it.

Yeah, with prices like that there's no way I'm going. Very excited that the world will be coming to Canada though. I'm hoping some group matches for the bigger stadia in the USA will be dirt cheap come matchday, and I can go then.

Dont be so overly fussed about actually going to the match. Going to the Fanzones can be a lot of fun as well, and significantly cheaper.

Yep. It definitely required a ‘delicate’ conversation with my wife this afternoon. lol.
Not even sure where our seats are. The tickets are just categorized as 1, 2, 3, or 4 - with 1 being the best seats. That $1000 ticket for Toronto is only category 3!
The $625 seats for Vancouver are actually category 1, though. So it looks like prices are going to be all over the place depending on teams and city.
I’m guessing that Toronto ticket is going to be one of the most expensive of the tournament (not counting later rounds) just because it’s Toronto and it’s Canada’s opener. There were other game tickets available in the $250 range …but you don’t know which two countries you’d be seeing yet.

Yes. My friend got a notification yesterday that he got early ticket purchase access due to the Visa promotion.
I am personally on a number of regular wait lists but I’ve heard nothing yet from those.

Same. I'm heartbroken. I so wanted to see Croatia in a world cup game.

If you don't get to a WC game, get yourself to Zagreb or Split for a qualifier match one day. The atmosphere is off the hook because its the hardest of the hardcore fans that go.
At actual WC matches, its snooty rich people that go and the chanting isn't necessarily the same unless it's in a big diaspora city like Berlin or Vienna.

Hell ya. Thats a good idea. I love Zagreb but I haven't been to Split. Yet. I plan on going to Zagreb again for 2028 for the new stadium. Maksmir is/was such a ####hole lol.
