Yeah, I think Suter is where I go next after Vernon. 180th overall, over 1,100 games played, and a career 0.74 points per game -- as a defenceman.

Yeah, I don’t really know what people are using for criteria to vote on this.
From my perspective, people that were first round picks were expected to be good and didn’t require much heavy lifting for the scouting staff
I would think people like Fleury Wolf and Johnny would have been picked ahead of Chopper.
So if we are talking about pics that were extreme value, I gotta go with the magic man here.

Man Loob was a 9th round pick as well, he was so good and likeable! Makarov was a late pick because he was Russian and they were just starting to come over to the NHL. Eighteen year old Makarov likely would have been a 1st round pick in today’s era. Some of the softest hands by any Flames ever.

He was also 25 years old when he was drafted and 31 years old by the time he was able to actually play in the NHL.
Definitely great for a 12 rounder, but for obvious reasons no team would want risk a very high pick on a player unable to even play in the NHL until they are entering their 30s. When he was drafted, I think everyone knew you'd be lucky to only get 4 or 5 good seasons out of him at the most. Still, there were a lot of teams probably kicking themselves for not taking him any time after the 2nd round. For a player picked in the top 2 rounds, you'd definitely want someone you hope will be a valuable player for longer than that, especially in an era when the UFA age was 31.

Interesting that we've only drafted two 500+ scorers in our history. I wonder how that ranks amongst all teams? Actually it's probably more rare than I'm thinking it is. I haven't looked in awhile, but there can't be much more than 30 or so players all-time.
Edit: I'm gonna go look this up!

Edit 2: Looks like there's 48, meaning the most it could be is 24 teams with a minimum of 2x 500-goal draftees. I'm gonna see what the actuals are.
