I don't understand why people root for a guy with no personality who has child-like tantrums in the dressing room though.
Don't care if he's talented, that alone's not enough reason to be personally vested in seeing him succeed.

Didn't he hold out and refuse to report when he had a valid contract but wanted to renegotiate it? Or was that Gilmour... I get the scenarios mixed up.

Yes. Both, kinda. Back in those days renegotiating contracts with term was a thing. Risebrough promised both Gilmour and Nieuwendyk that they would get new contracts and he didn't deliver on either.
Gilmour was upset with negotiations and sat out and was traded 39 seconds later. Nieuwendyk just held out before the last year of his contract began.
