Wow...keeping the band together. It's crazy how many of them took pay cuts to be there. Huby would be the highest paid player if he was still on the team...

Panthers need to make some cap clearing space. Think they had 4m ish left in. Cap after Ekblad.

By my math and calculations, he'll be 43 when the contract expires.
When is the last time a played to that age, and is there a cap penalty if he retires before then?

I would assume the length is because teams like Toronto were willing to offer more for a shorter team.
Wonder if the league takes a look at it though. How many people play until 43?

6 years? Its a decent AAV, but I'd have halved the term...

Wow Bill. Wow. That's some seriously good work. Dynasty window stays open.
This deal in particular won't age well at all, but that's not what matters right now.

For those surprised at the 6 years, why? It helps keep the annual cap hit down, and by year 4 or 5, I don't think Panthers care if Marchand is too old to be effective then. Their purpose it to win in the next 3 to 4 years. Everything after that is gravy.

So the plan is just to LTIR retire the contract because there is no way that a 37 year old is going to play out a 6 year contract.
I am starting to worry that the NHL will become a lot like the NBA was in 2010 with the tax free destination places being able to sign all the big name players while other teams are left scrambling for the scraps.

LTIR is the out. He just needs to get old and hurt and the Panthers can get out of the last 3-4 years of that deal.
Bennett could take out his knees at practice when he turns 40 and let him LTIR retire from there..
