Would you rather? - With Results (bye bye Rooney)
Curious on some consensus opinions here:
Would you rather?
1. Trade Andersson in the off season or sign him for something reasonable like 7x7 or 6x6?
2. Trade Coleman or have him be a staple on the 3rd4th line?
3. Trade Backlund or have him be a staple on the 3rd/4th line?
4. Keep Rooney or replace him with someone from the farm?
5. Stay quiet or go after a UFA?
6. Keep Pachal or trade him?
7. Keep Bean or trade him?
8. Keep Hanley or trade him?
9. Keep Miromanov or trade him?
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL or send back to junior?
Here are mine:
#1. trade him. #2 and #3 Keep them for the 4th line.
#4. Someone from farm. #5. Stay quiet. #6. Keep
#7. Trade #8. Keep #9. Trade #10. Play in NHL

Trade, also Andersson will not get one of those contracts on open market.
2. Trade Coleman or have him be a staple on the 3rd4th line?
Trade. We have too many prospect wingers to keep him and we're not at the stage of development where a player like him is useful.
3. Trade Backlund or have him be a staple on the 3rd/4th line?
Keep. Captain and probably not worth very much in the trade market.
4. Keep Rooney or replace him with someone from the farm?
Obviously replace. Morton is probably already better.
5. Stay quiet or go after a UFA?
Quiet, for the love of god.
6. Keep Pachal or trade him?
Keep, we don't have many good D-First d men in the system.
7. Keep Bean or trade him?
Not worth anything in a trade, but I wouldnt keep him outside of his popcorn munching abilities.
8. Keep Hanley or trade him?
Not worth anything in a trade, but I wouldnt keep him outside of his popcorn munching abilities. I like Bean more than Hanley personally but really doesnt matter.
9. Keep Miromanov or trade him?
Not worth anything. But don't keep him.
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL or send back to junior?
Here are mine:
#1. trade him. #2 and #3 Keep them for the 4th line.
#4. Someone from farm. #5. Stay quiet. #6. Keep
#7. Trade #8. Keep #9. Trade #10. Play in NHL

1. For those prices, sign.
2. Lean trade if Coleman wants one, if he’s happy here he should stay.
3. Keep Backlund
4. Replace!
5. Depends on the UFA but generally stand pat. Definitely don’t sign anyone for longer than 4 years, they’re all write offs anyways. Need to be ready to compete once Huberdeau can be dumped with 2 years left.
6. I like Pachal but if he could be part of a package for an impact guy that’d be cool. For a 4th or whatever? Pass, he’s good.
7. Bean is whatever, press box fodder.
8. I have not hated Hanley, which is surprising because hems basically d-man Rooney. Might just be Weegar effect. Would like to see his minutes go to someone more long term suited (Solovyov or Poirier etc)
9. Miro, same story as Bean.
10. NHL until christmas, release for u20s, send back to junior, then AHL playoffs.

1. Trade Andersson
2. Trade Coleman
3. Keep Backlund, revisit at the TD
4. Replace Rooney with Kerins, Kirkland Morton or a FA
5. Go after LD Gavrikov/Lindgren, C/RW Duchene/Giroux, G Lyon/Vladar
6. Trade Pachal before the TD if a prospect is pushing hard for the 3RD spot.
7. Waive Bean
8. Keep Hanley, as a great LD option that can fill in any 4-7D spot
9. Waive Miromanov
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL

1. If Andersson somehow signs for 6X6 keep him, otherwise trade
2. Trade Coleman in season if one of the prospects can actually replace him. If not, then 4RW
3. Keep Backlund. Even better if he gets legitimately pushed to 4C
4. Replace Rooney with Kerins rotating with Kirkland and / or Morton
5. Sign a UFA as long as it's not a retirement deal for an aging vet. A 4 year deal if possible, unless its Marner I guess?
6. Keep Pachal
7. Trade Bean
8. Keep Hanley as a depth 6 / 7 D
9. Trade Miro
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL

1. Trade Andersson.
2. Trade Coleman, probably in the lead-up to the deadline when the value of a good vet is highest.
3. Keep Backlund. Even though his ability is declining, he's a terrific mentor for young forwards.
4. Replace Rooney. If nobody suitable is on the farm, make a small trade to acquire a C for another tweener.
5. Look for a UFA LD.
6. Keep Pachal around. He's tough, serviceable, cheap, and only 25.
7. Bean might be the player you can trade for a Rooney replacement. Trade him if you can get some value.
8. Hanley is UFA, doubt they re-sign him. Good luck to him elsewhere.
9. Miromanov probably clears waivers at this point. He can backfill the Wranglers' D as more of their players graduate.
10. Parekh has outgrown junior. Bring him to the NHL but watch his minutes. Managing his workload, like Wolf this season, would be great.

Hanley has been a really solid pro for this team. I don't hate the idea of keeping him. Especially since team culture seems to be very good. That said, Bean is fine, and has a decent contract/ term already.
Locks to keep on the team:
Weegar, Bhal, Pachal
Keep 1 of these two:
Bean, Hanley
Trade :
Andersson
Waive:
Miro
That leaves 3 roster spots for:
Brzustewicz, Parehk, Solovyov, Kuznetsov, Grushnikov

Last 2 seasons of Rasmus Andersson:
159 games 20 goals 50 assists 70 points -49 avg 23:55 a night. 28 yr old
2 seasons of Brady Skjei pre contract (signed for 7x7 in 2024 offseason):
161 games 31 goals 54 assists 85 points +22 avg 21:30 a night. 29 yr old
2 seasons of Brett Pesce pre contract (signed for 5.5 x 6 in 2024 offseason)
152 games 8 goals 35 assists 43 points +21 avg 21 min a night. 29 yr old
2 seasons of Matt Roy pre contract (signed for 5.75 x6 in 2024 offseason)
163 games 14 goals 37 assists 51 points +29 avg 19:30 a night. 29 yr old.
I think 6x6 is extremely reasonable for rasmus, and may even be an overpay depending on more additional investigation into advanced d stats.

1. Trade Andersson in the off season or sign him for something reasonable like 7x7 or 6x6? Trade him because the ask is going to be $8M x 8
2. Trade Coleman or have him be a staple on the 3rd4th line? Trade Him
3. Trade Backlund or have him be a staple on the 3rd/4th line? Keep Him
4. Keep Rooney or replace him with someone from the farm? Let him Walk
5. Stay quiet or go after a UFA? Gavrikov would be a great fit on LD, I doubt it will happen but no issue if they go after Marner
6. Keep Pachal or trade him? Keep Him
7. Keep Bean or trade him? Trade Him
8. Keep Hanley or trade him? Maybe keep him, depends on term and ask
9. Keep Miromanov or trade him? Trade Him
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL or send back to junior? He can't be in junior again, so ideally it's the NHL or an exemption for the AHL.

1. Sign Rasmus for $6M*6? Yes please! I think any decline is over stated here, he was playing hurt and too many minutes. That will change. We won’t find a better minute muncher for less than that, and he can be moved around based on how well the kids play.
2. Assuming Dallas is on his 10 team trade list, send Coleman there with salary retained for Bourque. It’s good for everyone.
3. Keep Backlund as a stable/reliable 3rd/4th centre.
4. Replace Rooney with Pospisil, Kerins or Morton.
5. Avoid UFAs. Sign RFAs to long deals and use any extra on short term salary dumps as long as siad dumps come with picks prospects. Maybe a backup goalie?
6. Keep Pachal. He is a solid 3rd pair D. If a kid supercedes him, he’ll fetch something at the TDL.
7. Trade Bean for any pick we can get. I wish he was on the expiring contract instead of Hanley.
8. Keep Hanley as the 7th D as long as it is a cheap contract. Like Pachal, he has value if a youngster steals a spot on the 3rd pair.
9. Trade Miromanov for any pick we can get. More likely, he will have to be buried. Not an NHLer.
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL. He will make this an easy decision for the Flames. So good, confident and smart.

I don't think Backlund can be traded until after January 1st or something like that, submits a 16 team trade list.

I'm sure you're just being a dumbass or something, but all listed were UFA signings. I was comparing Rasmus to other UFAs, I don't think 6x6 is too cheap or a steal of a deal at all. IMO a hometown discount on Ras should start with a 5.
Still not sure I would sign him to that. I definitely don't think it's the right move for the future of the franchise.
You want a nurse contract?

This is all contingent on my strategies to foster young player development and try to bottom out for real next year with McKenna available in the draft.
1. Trade Andersson in the off season or sign him for something reasonable like 7x7 or 6x6?
Trade Andersson. He has moments, and he sure does give it his all and loves the city, but I don't want him blocking the top 4 for guys like Brusztewicz or Parekh.
2. Trade Coleman or have him be a staple on the 3rd4th line?
Keep Coleman. Very good veteran to have to teach the kids how to play. 2 more years at about $5 million for what he brings is solid, and we need some larger salaries to make the floor.
3. Trade Backlund or have him be a staple on the 3rd/4th line?
Is this a serious question? Keep Backlund until he retires. Might be after next year based on some of the decline we saw this year. Maybe another 1 year contract after this one.
4. Keep Rooney or replace him with someone from the farm?
Let Rooney walk. He gets beat up on a bit too much, but he's the very definition of "replacement level player". Let's replace him with a young guy that might flourish. He is already 31 after all.
5. Stay quiet or go after a UFA?
Go after a UFA in the similar strategy to Mantha this year. Nothing long term unless they are a truly great player. Get someone who could be productive that you might be able to flip at the deadline for a draft pick.
6. Keep Pachal or trade him?
Keep Pachal for the duration of his extension, but that's probably it. I like him overall. He's tough, physical, clears the net and corners well, and skates surprisingly well too. He doesn't really add any offense, but is a good partner for a younger, less physically developed offensive d-man to partner with. He also doesn't make a lot so you can bench or waive him if the lineup dictates.
7. Keep Bean or trade him?
Trade him. This one is an easy decision. I think he has physical tools (skating, passing, a little bit of a shot) but he is prone to wildly unintelligent coverage decisions and really struggles with physical play in the corners. He's replacement level for me.
8. Keep Hanley or trade him?
This one is tough, but I think you actually re-sign him to a 2 year deal. I think he really showed in the second half that he can be a Steve Staios type of defenseman. Solid all around and makes good decisions, but doesn't have high end skill. He's a plug and play guy that you don't worry about too much, but doesn't really move the needle either.
9. Keep Miromanov or trade him?
Oof...trade. He's just not an NHL quality defender. Very unreliable. Not sure he's ever going to get there.
10. Keep Parekh in the NHL or send back to junior?
Keep Parekh. He has dominated junior 2 years in a row and needs to develop at the next level. I wish that was the AHL, which would be best, but it would be a waste of a year to have him go back to junior too. He'll be eased into the lineup on the 3rd pair next year and Huska will coach him into a solid defender. He will make a lot of mistakes and be exposed at times. I don't mind next year because I sorta want the Flames to have a good shot at the lottery in 2026. Take your lumps and learn each and every night. It's the best thing for him and the team long term.

1. Trade Andersson for futures, replace internally
2. Keep Coleman, key part of the culture.
3. Same with Backlund.
4. Replace Rooney with farm player.
5. Stay quiet in UFA.
6. Keep Pachal
7. No more Bean.
8. Keep Hanley
9. Miro is waiver fodder, not much of a market.
10. Keep Parekh, replaces Andersson.
I'll add another: I'd explore a Kadri trade while his value is at peak. He's the one player I think if moved would have a notable impact on the team falling back in the standings, which is the direction I lean towards with the McKenna draft.
