News Roundup

Flames keep playoff hopes alive with massive win over Wild

In their biggest game of the season coming off their most disappointing loss, the Calgary Flames chased the Minnesota Wild’s starting netminder en route to a much-needed 4-2 win.

Calgary scored four times on Filip Gustavsson before the Wild pulled him in favour of veteran Marc-André Fleury, who got a rousing standing ovation from Flames fans given his impending retirement. Fourth liner Ryan Lomberg’s breakaway goal midway through the third period all but locked things up for the Flames and gave a raucous Saddledome crowd of nearly 19,000 even more reason to cheer.

With their backs against the wall, the Flames passed a crucial test against the Wild

The Flames ended up playing the precise game they needed to play. They out-shot and out-chanced the Wild in all three periods. They scored first and never trailed in the game. Both sides of their special teams units came up big in key moments. And when the Wild made a third period push, the Flames bent but they didn’t break.

The Flames have two remaining paths to the playoffs, but need help on either one

On Saturday night, the Blues lost in a shootout to Seattle (gaining a point) and the Wild beat Vancouver in overtime (gaining two points).
Here’s how things look in the standings as Sunday begins

Calgary Wranglers clinch 2025 Calder Cup Playoff berth

For the third consecutive year in team history, the Wranglers are post-season bound. As of Saturday evening, the Calgary AHL affiliate has punched their ticket to the Calder Cup playoffs. The Wranglers have qualified every year in team history and earned a first round bye in their inaugural season by clinching the Pacific Division.

Man, I used to love Hamrlik. I thought he was really underappreciated in his time here.

That Gridin clip is fun too.

Nothing left to do but win a very winnable game. It's still a longshot, but it's possible to make the playoffs. Even if that's all they do, that's a massive achievement with this group. Even if they don't, they've still achieved far more than anyone imagined from them.

You have to be proud of this team, no matter what happens. It's a far cry from the listless group that Sutter had in his last year, who didn't seem to care whether or not they lost. This group cares. This group works hard for each other. This group has quite possibly the best teammate vibes of any team in the NHL. I just hope they get rewarded for all those great qualities.

It's a long shot to make it in of course, but have to win to at least have a chance (to keep having a chance) come Tuesday.

Winning today would make Tuesday a very interesting day with plenty of anxiety, bring it on!

Re: the Rooney and the PK.

Fans complain about unproductive players like Rooney. But preventing goals on the PK is just as important as scoring goals on the PP. We recognize the value of PP specialists on the roster, so why shouldn’t we recognize the value of PK specialists?

Hopefully Flames do their part and win this game that they should and have to win. Then hope on Tuesday that the Blues and/or Wild stumble in games they should both win.

If that happens, then Flames somehow, someway are back to controlling their destiny in making the playoffs. Would be wild if Flames were to make it, when they were suppose to be in top lottery pick contention.

Yeah don't over look this one.

Get it done and see what happens on Tuesday.

Can't believe I just started game story prep on April 13th.

This is a scary one that they can’t overlook the sharks just 6 days ago they controlled the game against us unt we woke up. They have lost 8 in a row and I’m sure they want to win a few.

Game 80, and somehow they still have a chance. Not a great chance, but there is still a route they make it in.

Have to win today though, and then worry about what happens on Tuesday.
Fan appreciation night at the dome today, so give something more for the fans to appreciate

Sure. And send the message to the team that we'll pull out a player that's been working towards the playoffs goal all year with the team just so we can put all the pressure on a kid with no NHL experience.

But, you know, fan service.

Nice twitter thread by Darren Haynes in the Parekh thread.

Here's an excerpt:
Quote:
Many want to liken Zayne Parekh’s situation in joining the Flames to Cale Makar’s situation when he stepped into the line-up for the Avs in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Firstly, dare to dream. If Parekh ends up anywhere close to Makar, what a cornerstone player he will be.

Secondly, let’s set the record straight on two things:

1. Age Matters - Makar was 20.5 years old when he played his first NHL game. Parekh just turned 19 on Feb. 15. That 16 months of difference is not insignificant.

2. Level of Competition Matters - Makar joined Colorado after playing two seasons of NCAA hockey. Parekh is coming out of junior hockey.

For context, in Makar’s final game with Massachusetts when they lost in the Frozen Four final, Minnesota-Duluth’s average age was 20.9. In Parekh’s final game with Saginaw when they got ousted from the OHL playoffs, Erie’s average age was 18.0.

That’s a three-year difference in average age and it’s over that time that boys literally become men. So again, Makar’s readiness based on the strength and age of players he went up against all season would have been higher.
People that think Parekh should play because other players have should read it.

Is this sarcasm? Because Mike Gould's takes on Twitter were absolutely awful.

"Intellectual dishonesty"? Are you kidding, Mike?

And not one player that projects as a 1st liner in 5 years? That's a tough one. Coronato does, IMO. Zary could be. Any of: Honzek, Gridin, Suniev, Basha and Battaglia have a chance - it's a long shot for each, but that's how progression works, and why you want multiple picks, because 5 longshots is much better than one.

To adamantly proclaim that they have 'not one' is a bad take. Bold, I'll give him that. But also bad.
