No. I don’t make the rules. The team is ostensibly worth $2B - I don’t want to hear anymore about how they just can’t make it work as a viable business unless they make the playoffs.
Figure it the #### out.

Has a single player ever altered the landscape of team net worth like McDavid? Oilers are on their own island when it comes to revenue.

Crazy how great of an investment a sports team can be for a mega rich person if they bought back in the early 2000’s
Seeing this yesterday made me google the Mark Cuban Mavs transactions. He bought them for $285M in 2000 and in 2023 sold 68% majority share for $3.5B

I thought a lot more teams would make more than $100M/yr. Also boo CNBC for making their sort function alphabetical instead of numerical...

Correct me if I am wrong, but that number is their valuation for the purpose of borrowing money/taxes ect.
That number means does not mean a team can be sold for that much, until a team really is sold for that much.
Moreover, it doesn't reflect what actual profits are.

Correct. And as discussed in the other trhead, valuations for sports teams for some reason use much different parameters than normal business valuations. Who knows if they are valid.
But the annual profit is something of a mystery. POs seems to be a big deal in hockey as far as that goes, because the player wage expense is for the regular season only. Hence the importance to some owners of getting in for a round at least.

I wouldn't put much trust in the revenue and EBITDA numbers either. As for the valuations, they have the Lightning valued for $1.95 Billion. They were sold for a valuation of $1.8B 13 months ago.
The Smith's paid $1.2B for Uta a couple of years ago.
Teams rarely get sold which is why the value is rocketing. The Flames owners would make a killing if they wanted out.

While I agree teams wshould build their own arenas, the value of the franchise doesn't have a lot to do with whether a team can afford somenthing like an arena or a rebuild.
Let's say a person's net worth is $2M, because they own a house and other stuff. It doesn't mean they don't have to really think about whether they can afford a $60K car.
