Backlund's injury exposes Flames in playoff push

Despite missing Mikael Backlund with an upper body injury that will keep the defensive stalwart out week-to-week, the Flames held Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas and Cale Makar off the scoresheet Friday.

However, the team that added more depth than anyone before the deadline used it to beat a Flames team on their heels from the get-go, chasing the first 40 minutes.

'It's Time'

The first race of the Formula 1 season starts in a matter of hours in Australia.

But at WinSport Saturday, onlookers were treated to a photo finish.

A sprint between the two biggest Flames - 6’8” Adam Klapka and 6’6” Kevin Bahl - that saw Klapka come away victorious by the slimmest of margins.

It was a brief moment of levity during a tense, high-pressure stretch run.

Despite the loss in Colorado and Dallas recently I believe if the Flames can sneak into the playoffs they can be first round spoilers because of their commitment to low event hockey. They get another opportunity tonight against the Leafs to try to upset a good team and show they are competitive. Unfortunately I’ve cancelled my Prime membership so I’ll either boycott watching or try to navigate the high seas. Would love to see Kadri bring another big game to put in the faces of his original team and give Wolf some good exposure to the eastern media. Go Flames!

This is a game I feel we should lose, but at the same time the Leafs have not been good recently. It could honestly go either way

Will be at the game tonight and am pumped. Leafs looked terrible against Ottawa and seem to be spiralling. Hopefully can take advantage of that.

Feels like its been forever since the Flames won in Toronto, but I think it was just a few years ago? Regardless, the Flames need to find their game and get hot. No better time than tonight. Regardless of who is in the lineup. Tomorrow won't be any easier, though Zary owes them a goal or two in NY.

I know it's been said a lot this year, but I can't believe how much more I look forward to these games on Prime versus Sportsnet.

The convenience, the broadcast quality, and the broadcasters themselves - it's night and day versus Sportsnet, who feel like they are stuck in 2008.

I'm not even having much fun watching the Flames right now, but I know I will enjoy watching tonight.

This weeknight eastern games really run afoul of my post work trips to the gym. Come on Gary, how am I supposed to establish a routine?

Blues and Utah are on a roll. Vancouver seems to have found their game again. That's all bad news. The good news is that the Flames are in command of their future - they sit 8th in P%. This is a huge game, and a huge test for them. I have no idea what their record in Toronto is, but it sure seems that in the last while, it hasn't been very good. Still, any team can beat any other team in this league on any given night. Lose this one, and they risk losing being the masters of their own destiny. That's a big difference.

I don't like their chances without Backlund, even if he was nursing an injury for a while. He was still by far the best defensive player on this team that is playing a very poor stretch of hockey. With that being said, hopefully we embarrass the Leafs tonight.

I wish we could sit out Sharangovich for a few games, but I understand we are short of centers.

He offers so little right now that I genuinely think you'd be better off with the enthusiasm you'd get from a call up at C and at the wing. Stromgren, Kerins etc.

Teams that are out of it and call up kids tend to overachieve and play spoiler at the end of the year. Albeit a lack of pressure but certainly some youthful exuberance. We aren't there yet, but would be interesting to see those legs in the lineup.

That’s a really good point - that bump could be the difference between making/missing the playoffs.

Here's your season, lose tonight and the rest of the road trip likely goes awry as that would mean 3 bad losses in a row. Head for 10th if possible, need teams below to win more. Win tonight and they get some enthusiasm/momentum for the rest of the road trip, teams around them need to lose more and the Flames can scratch/claw their way in.

Every game from here is huge, but a win tonight or a loss tonight likely sets up the rest of the year.
