Flames Holiday Break Review: Nazem Kadri
With the NHL holiday break starting early for the Calgary Flames, we're looking at each and every member of the franchise and what their season has been like so far. Today, we're profiling Nazem Kadri.
Flames Holiday Break Review: Blake Coleman
There are no grades — this isn't high school — but these quick-and-dirty glimpses into their season illustrate where they're at ahead of the calendar flip from 2024 to 2025.
Ranking Flames' Backlund's Statistics Among NHL Captains
On Sept. 27, 2023, the Calgary Flames named Mikael Backlund as the team's 21st captain. He remains the only Swedish-born captain in Flames history and was the first dressing room leader since Mark Giordano left in the 2021 Seattle Kraken expansion draft.
Moreover, at 34, Backlund became the fourth oldest player named to the captaincy, following Steve Smith (36), Dave Lowry (35), and Jean Pronovost (34).
Flames Holiday Break Review: Matt Coronato
Matt Coronato is another one of those impressive young players contributing to some unexpected success for the Calgary Flames so far this season.
Giving a gift to each Calgary Flames player this Christmas
The last twelve months (and even before) have been a roller coaster in Calgary. The team has seen immense turnover on the ice and on the bench, and beyond all else, this is a team that could really use some stability and direction.
As the holidays are upon us and it’s Christmas, here is what each Calgary Flames player should wake up to open under the tree as Santa Conroy makes his way through his list.

It’ll be interesting to see if they have a turkey hangover. Hopefully they run the sharks out of the rink.

Should be a fun game to watch. Celebrini has been an absolute treat to watch this season so far. Got injured early on in the season, but he has landed in the NHL with both feet running. For a rookie, what an incredible 3-zone player. He has been much better than I thought he would be, especially at this stage. Smith has been a bit slower to acclimatize. The most surprising thing is to see Granlund leading the team in points - he is resurrecting his career right now.
Looking forward to this game. San Jose aren't the pushovers they were last season, even if they are still at the bottom of the standings. Much more entertaining team to watch this year.

There aren’t really any easy outs in the league. Almost anyone can beat anyone.

Contention cycle chart doesn’t look to promising. Looks like we’re Latvia.

100%. I really like the colour, but there is just too much of it. Black pants would look really crisp.

I don't agree. I mean sure, if you are wanting to contend, you're in the worst place possible. But if you're going to rebuild, you WANT to get as far down into the bottom left as possible, where you are then in the best position to start rebuilding, and moving up (i.e. acquiring young talent).
What you don't want, in that graphic, is to be in the middle (DET, OTT, and Soon BUF). What you do want, is to be around the outside, moving in your direction of choice.

I’m just wondering why Nashville isn’t in the same cycle.

It's hard to assess without knowing the criteria they're using, but my guess is that they still have several key players on the roster that keep them in 'win now' mode, like Forsberg, Josi, Saros, O'Reilly and Skjei, and then adding Stamkos and Marchessault.
Plenty of talent there to say they are in win now mode, but also, every single one of those guys is in their 30s, except Saros who is 29. So the window is closing.
So they are right where they should be, I guess.

I think the case could be made that Calgary is more poorly slotted than NASH.
They have NSH as an 8 on the Present Rating scale (which sounds about right) and a 2 on the Future Rating scale, which also sounds about right.
They have the Flames as a 2 on the Present Rating, which is fair. But they have them as a 1 on the Future Rating, which seems really harsh. Only WSH and PIT are ranked lower for Future Rating, which doesn't jive at all with their prospect base. Wolf alone should put them higher than that. It probably makes more sense to have them at about 3 or 4, which would place them around PHI and SEA.

Treliving is just haunting this franchise right now. I’ll be glad when this ludicrous draft condition is a thing of the past. Such a malicious thing to do to a fan base.

It wasn't malicious. He was trying to contend in the here and how. He wasn't trying to intentionally punish the franchise or anything.

How do they come to that conclusion. I’m wondering if we being unfairly expected to have more high end talent when we have just started our rebuild. 2023 draft was not a rebuild draft. Even the 2024 draft isn’t really a rebuilding draft we played a good portion of the season with the guy who we used to get picks. 2025 draft to me is the first official draft of the rebuild. So I’m not sure why they would expect us to have stock piled high end picks. Even at that Parekh and Wolf should have us a bit higher.
