Fixing Forever A Flame
Ken King had a good idea in 2012, players that aren't retired number status but still deserve to be honoured can be. While the idea was good the execution was garbage, it was the original CalgaryNext. Al MacInnis is without question a retired number player, without question. Joe Nieuwendyk is the second of only two Forever A Flame members and both are jersey retirement status.
Time to resurrect Forever A Flame, fix the two members and use the secondary honour properly.
Retired
2 - MacInnis,
9 - Lanny McDonald
12 - Jarome Iginla
25 - Joe Nieuwendyk
30 - Mike Vernon
34 - Miikka Kiprusoff
Future Retired - 13 Johnny Gaudreau
Forever A Flame is open to interpretation. Long serving Flames that were not stars or even short term Flames that made a memorable impact. This is very open and each person will have wildly different views but some consensus selections for me would be Mark Giordano, Robyn Regehr and when he retired Mikael Backlund. Other players that I think would be worth the honour would be Joel Otto, Dion Phaneuf, Craig Conroy, Gary Roberts and as a coach Daryl Sutter. Would even love guys like Matt Stajan and Martin Gelinas two players who left lasting impacts on this team for various reasons. A guy like Sean Monahan in the future as well.
Wildcard is of course Theo Fluery but I don't want to turn this into a theo thread.

Fit the mold of those already hanging (and 13 when time is right) sure. Everything else. Nope, they can have their names somewhere in the new barn but not in the rafters.

I think they should have those wacky inflatable arm guys with jersey numbers on them in the concourse.
Problem Solved.

Im fine with the current retirees at 4. Two from the 89 Stanley cup and 2 from the 04 run.
Johnny is an interesting one. I'm comfortable if they retire it and comfortable if they don't. If it was me, I'd retire his number.

It's big thief beef jerky. They use to sponsor the bloopers a the flames games a few years ago. This is probably just a continuation of such bloopers.

There was a joke, that doesn't make it a joke thread. Read the entire thing, chumley.

I would support adding MacInnis and Nieuwendyk to the retired jersey list.

Yeah retired numbers are cool and everything, and we could likely debate it till the cows come home.
But we gotta start asking the actual hard hitting question. Who's getting a statue when we move into the new building??

Would you say Big Thief beef jerky is worthy of retiring to the rafters? Or is more like "forever a jerky" where we should honor it but not to the same extent as McSweenys?

Assuming 11 and 13 get retired, that will be six for a 45 year franchise.
Toronto has 19 for a 100+ year old franchise.
Detroit has 8. The Islanders have 8 and entered the league same time as the Flames.

Backlund is Forever a Flame, not retired.

Just my opinion.

Without knowing all who the Islanders retired, it certainly feels like they have an argument for a greater number than the Flames.
IMO you make it the rarest of rare things, reserved for face of the franchise players.
