Default Who Sticks Around in Current D Group?

What is everyone's thoughts on who, out of our current NHL D group, will still be around in a couple years time?

Bahl-Andersson
Weegar-Miromanov
Bean-Pachal
Hanley-Barrie

I personally think only 3-4 of them will be around and we will have 3-4 new faces rounding out the group by then.

Weegar and Bahl are all but guaranteed to be here for the foreseeable future and I think the Flames, right or wrong, will push to re-sign Andersson.

I don't think Miromanov and Bean are showing enough to solidify their future here and Barrie and Hanley are obviously not in the long-term plans. Pachal is the wildcard and could go either way. Wouldn't mind him sticking as a 5-7 but with the number of potential graduates coming there may not be room, especially if Andersson stays.

Grusnikov and Parekh will push for spots in the next 1-2 years and Solovyov seems to be coming around of late playing in the minors. We have a plethora of solid D prospects, who will need time but are still promising.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the group in the coming years.

If Andersson gets re-signed, then of course he will be here. Otherwise, I only see Weegar and Bahl as long-term players on the blue-line for Calgary. Maybe one or two of the rest take a step forward and solidify themselves longer-term, but I would argue everyone else has been more or less replaceable.

Not sure who's coming up but from the bunch here now, I'd want to see this:

Bahl - Weegar
X - X
X - X (Consider Bean - Pachal)

Rasmus traded this year, Barrie traded with Miro and Hanley not renewed.

Lots waiting in the wings though ideally it's staggered call-ups to still balance things out.

Would consider picking up Fabbro, completely makes Hanley irrelevant and potential to play higher up.

Miro is already Fabbro except better. No need to give up assets for at best a lateral move.

I would keep Bahl, Weegar, Miro and maybe Pachal. Hoping they trade Rasmus for a haul just because I think this team is still 3-4 years from really competing for a Cup.

Anderson is the only one I truly care about.

I don’t think we should be picking up any cast off dmen or goalies. Unless it’s Makar or Shesterkin. We have surpluses in those spots.

Centers on the other hand is another story.

Weegar, Miromanov, Bahl, Solovyov later this season, Parekh and Bruz or Grush crack the team next year

I’m not sure about Miramanov. He doesn’t really do anything well. Thought he would provide a bit more offensively.

I'd keep Weegar, Bean and Pachal. We got some real time righties and Grushnikov coming through asap.

Weegar and Bahl are the only two I’d say for sure, and I wouldn’t be upset with Pachal on the 3rd pair.

Flames have a lot of defensive prospects that will be pushing into the lineup starting next year, so I just want to see space made and assets gained.

Ultimately all will be gone, therefore I’d suggest that it’s a who and when conversation and a lot of that is based on contracts and injuries. In one of the other threads there’s a discussion about culture. I’d say that the flames will be careful with developing the players without the pressure of putting young players out 100% as some teams do. That can really affect development.

For me it’s about the timing versus the specific players. I also think that conroy will manage contracts aggressively. I’d expect UFAs to be regularly traded.

No need to give up assets to pick up Fabbro if you can claim him on waivers. If you can claim him, keep him, Weegar, and Bahl, and trade the rest. Unless you can sign Andersson to a team-friendly contract, in which case he could be a valuable mentor and help to build up the professional culture in the organization.

There is zero reason to claim Fabbro.

I tend to agree which is why I don't mind the idea of re-signing Anderson.

Him, Weegar and Bahl can mentor and insulate guys like Grushnikov, Parekh, Solovyov etc. who should be pushing for spots in the coming seasons.

I think it's important to not put young guys in positions over their head that can hinder their confidence so having those 3 around to carry the load is important.

Obviously if Andersson wants out you have to have a contingency plan but, even as a rebuilding team, you don't want to leave too many gaping holes on the backend. Having a legit top 3 will make the transition easier for the young guys as they come along.

I don't think anyone on the Flames current D-core will be on the team 6+ years from now. Andersson may have a chance. Though he really should be, and probably will be, traded.

Several of the defense prospects in the system should be on the team by then. Their development is what's important.
