Not bad considering the current arena situation.

Every team in the league is worth more than a billion. Utah nearly doubled in value from last season in Arizona.
In 2021, the Habs were the third most-valuable team in the league with the same valuation the Flames are at now, which puts them 18th.

In 1988 the Quebec Nordiques were bought for $15 million dollars. Prices have certainly increased in 36 years

Vegas paid $500M expansion fee 9 years ago. Increased 354%
Seattle paid $650M. Increased 224% in 3 years
no wonder there are many interested in expansion teams.
Rumor is next expansion fee will be $2B

Incredible that taxpayers still subsidize arenas for owners of these franchises.

I'd imagine the completed deal to build a new arena is factored in.

That's what we have to do if we want to be a world class city, to rival other world class cities like:
- St. Louis, Missouri
- Columbus, Ohio
- Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Buffalo, New York
We can't have cities like New York, Hong Kong, and London thinking we are not a world class, like them

It's not really surprising.
Arizona was easily the least valuable team in the NHL - and Meruelo got $1B for his efforts.
All the other values were always going to skyrocket after that.

How much was a house in Calgary back in 88? $90k?
Oh i guess my parents bought a 2,800sq ft house in 1988 in Scenic Acres for $108k.

I wondered that, but don't think so as the 1 year value increase is right in line with the other clubs.

Sounds about right. What's that house worth now, around $1 million? I just looked and highest list price in scenic acres is $939k so call it 9x or 10x since '88.
The Nordiques sold for $15MM in 1988, and the Coyotes (to move) sold for $1 billion USD, or roughly $1,400MM.
That's 90x - 100x on the NHL team, so ten times better than real estate. It'd be like if a nice suburban house in scenic acres went for nine million dollars...

Yeah there's no way they're including a building that isn't even under construction in the valuation yet. That's one of the main reasons the Oilers are so much higher than the Flames.
Still gross on so many levels, no more so than the fact many feel we need to be sharing the cost of these buildings given how far values have risen in the last 20 years.
