Mark Divver has a list of the top college UFA blueliners.

Mark Divver's list of top college UFA forwards

Flames clearly target players coached by Mike Hastings - Connor Mackey, Walker Duehr, Sam Morton and David Silye were all coached by the current Wisconsin Badger coach. Unfortunately, Wisconsin isn't a very good team this year, but Divver has this guy on his list

Quote:
Christian Fitzgerald, University of Wisconsin
The 22-year-old had 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists) in 37 games last season. He played his freshman season for Minnesota State in 2022-23 before following coach Mike Hastings to Madison before last season.

He has two assists in eight games this season.

He attended development camp with the Vancouver Canucks in 2023.
I'll update this thread with my personal favourites when time allows

For the name alone:

"Michael Mastrodomenico, University of Notre Dame
A solidly built (6-0, 210), right-shot defenseman, Mastrodomenico has a developing offensive game.

After he had seven points (one goal, six assists) in 33 games as a junior last season, he already has eight points (two goals, six assists) in 10 games this season, including a goal and an assist in an 8-3 loss to Michigan State University on Nov. 15.

The 20-year-old attended 2024 development camp with the Bruins."

As was the case last season, D John Prokop looks the most appealing.

I know the kid but he stopped listening to me years ago...

Those HockeyDB stats drive me crazy. He hasn't been 178 pounds since he was 16. He's playing between 195 and 200 pounds. Blake Coleman type but a centre.

Suniev gets an assist in a 4-0 victory over BU
it was a crazy game with 5 goals taken off the board due to goalie interference
despite just the single assist, Suniev had a strong game on the defensive side, shutting down BUs top line and winning lots of board battles.

Friedman mentioned on 32 thoughts podcast that a few NHL teams are keeping tabs on C Luke Haymes from Dartmouth. He only named Ottawa but I assume it is because Haymes is an Ottawa native.

From Scott Wheeler

Quote:
Michigan’s T.J. Hughes is getting a lot of attention from NHL clubs. Michigan doesn’t have the abundance of talent that we’re used to it having this year but Hughes has gone from being very successful playing with good players like Rutger McGroarty to being very successful as more of a driver/go-to guy on his own this year. He’s a 6-foot center who is excellent in the faceoff circle. He plays the bumper on their power play. And his pace and B game, once the question, have started to come.

Holy Cross' Liam McLinskey, cousin of Rangers prospect Drew Fortescue, is going to get signed. They’re not a program that typically produces NHL talent but he’s the reigning Atlantic Hockey player of the year and a Hobey Baker finalist. He’s a 6-foot-3 right-shot winger who can play in all situations.

I know there’s some NHL interest in Wisconsin’s Christian Fitzgerald, whose counting stats don’t scream but whose elite skating does.

There’s also some interest in Dartmouth sophomore D C.J. Foley (who’s only 21 and is pretty talented/plays huge minutes), Maine captain David Breazeale (a big defenseman who has played big minutes for them), ASU’s Lukas Sillinger (older brother of Blue Jacket Cole, though it sounds like he may be looking at an AHL deal), busy and smooth-skating UND sophomore Jake Livanavage (though that may be more for a year or two from now) and Union junior D John Prokop (one of their leading scorers over the last three seasons).

And one surging name: Army D Mac Gadowsky (son of Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky, who he has played against!). Gadowsky is a 6-foot-3 D who is up for the Hobey, has been that team’s best player by a country mile and has been on a tear in the last month to emerge as one of the most productive D in all of college hockey and seems to make a play every game.

I’m sure there are others, too. It’s not a great class from what I gather, though.

With a lot of talented incoming drafted kids, I don't see much opportunity for college free agents to sign on with the Flames. A center like TJ Hughes, maybe, who'd probably be middle six if he panned out.

The Flames always seem to sign the less heralded kids. Fitzgerald being an elite skater would be the prototypical Flames signee, while Prokop was been to Flames development camp.

Flames have Trevor Hoskin in McLinskey's conference so they're no doubt familiar with him.

T.J. Hughes had some outstanding numbers with the Brooks Bandits of the AJHL. A positive experience in this part of the country can't hurt the Flames' chances.
