Interesting that the Rangers got this done without seeing if his play late last season would carry over at least for the first half of the season but clearly they think it will.

He was one of their better players in the playoffs. Seems like a decent gamble on a 1st Overall pick that many thought would end up being a bust.

When you've got a high talent young player who takes big leaps forward, even if only for a few months, you have to run with it a bit.
Worst case scenario here, Lafreniere has established himself as a second liner and shows that he's willing to do lots of things that don't show up on the scoresheet.
Very little risk here and the potential for this contract to be a massive bargain. The Rangers killed it here IMO.

I think that the strategy is to get all of the core players signed, and then offer him every last cent available. It will end up a number like 9 675 456.12, if he signs.

On the other hand if he continues to improve, the cost could go higher.

$7.45M is going to be like 3rd liner money in a few years.
He's a young 1st oa pick that's starting to bust out.
There's always risk, but it feels like a great move by the rangers.

There was an article on FlamesNation (I think), suggesting that the Flames lock up Zary in a similar fashion. I agree. And I am surprised there hasn't been any talk of it.

But what contract?
I wouldn't give him $7M per season. He hasn't shown that kind of consistent offense.

It is a gamble, but I feel it is a better gamble betting on young guys taken high in a draft who look like they are trending up, versus taking a gamble on a vet to keep up his production into their 30's. Either way, these can blow up in the team's face, but I do think it is a better gamble betting on the youth trending up.

7x7 is too much for Zary right now, he needs to have a season where he scores more than 14 goals before he's offered that. By the end of the season he may prove worthy.

For Zary? I wouldn't be a fan of that right now. If he has a big year, sure. So far this season he's improved but a long ways to go to earn that length and cash imo. If he does earn it as the season progresses, great.

Which is why you do it now... the Flames need to identify a few players that they think are long term bets. Rasmus Andersson had six career goals and 30 points when he signed his six year deal, kudos to Treliving for this.
Connor Zary is exactly the type of player you buy into now.
Dustin Wolf is another.

It would be absurd to give Zary that kind of money at this point.
He doesn't even have arb rights yet so there is zero reason to pay him like a pending UFA.
Let him prove what he's worth before projecting it.....and in no way does he compare to Lafreniere at this point.
He looks great this year, lets see it continue and maybe go long term at some point after the season.
Wolf hasnt even proven he is NHL level yet....so no idea how you can make a case to sign him long term.
