Depending on the severity (the worse the better) of it, welcome to the Edmonton Oilers Ryan Johansen!

RyJo sounds like a crappy team mate. Don't know what happened in Colorado but he was literally kicked out of the locker room and banned. Philly wouldn't even let him in the building.

^ Not sure it has to be bad. The Flyers took on the Johansen contract without the intention of playing him. They could've just found something to help them get out of his contract.

The Sens had Pinto over a barrel for proxy betting. Not even on the NHL, just placing bets in the US through friends while playing in Canada, because he wasn't allowed to place bets in Canada. It's a big no-no, but I could easily see someone doing it unintentionally.

Wonder if the Flyers are saying Johansen got injured doing a risky non-hockey activity. That would be a material breach.

Also of note Johansen is represented by the same agent that represents Cutter Gauthier. Flyers reportedly passed on Buium because of the agent. Wonder if there is also some pettiness going on here too

Nashville might be the most excited if this ends up going through.

They could use the extra $4M cap space and would really open up options for a team looking to be aggressive right now.

They would go from $3M of cap space to $7M.

Perhaps something to do with refusal to submit to a physical. Trying to LTIR himself.

The truth has to be somewhere in the middle!

I think Philadelphia fans threw batteries at him whilst he was Heli-Skiing in Colorado and the whole thing turned into a Roland Emmerich film.

The Johansen contract was a pretty easy one to buy out. Johansen would have also been paid $8 million in cash for the upcoming season, so I can see why he's not super happy, as he's likely to get a fraction of that if he signs as a UFA somewhere, assuming anyone would take him on.

-RyJo was traded from COL to PHI
-Upon arriving in PHI declared himself as injured (he was playing before traded with no public injury)
-This weekend at Cam Atkinson's wedding, there were videos of RyJo lifting up the bride, and others, which contradict his claim of injury

FWIW - Speculation I have seen online amongst fans is that PHI is voiding the contract for lying about an injury and withholding services.

What's the material breach? Is he like a spy or taking part in espionage for another team?

Didn't they waive him the minute they acquired him and assign him to their AHL team when he cleared? It seemed like the Flyers were all to happy to buy him out this summer, but than he claimed he was injured and should be put on LTIR. So he basically would not have to play the rest of season. Briere and the Flyers brass did seem skeptical from the get go. I'd have to defer to getbak or someone better versed on the CBA about buying out an injured player. I think its only permitted if the player allows it otherwise they expect to go to Robidas Island.

Would not surprise me if the Flyers were investigating this all along. Not sure if there's a bone to pick with the agent or not. But the Flyers might feel like he didn't honor his contract and can avoid a buyout here and save a few dollars.

I seem to recall a player a few years back who was injured skiing and the team and it was considered a material breach. I think sometimes it's at the discretion of the team, but if it is a non-hockey related injury that occurred while they were under contract, they can pull this move.

Wasn't that Patrice Brisebois who was out with a knee injury, and was reported to have gone skiing in Seitzerland while he was out?

The trade was over 5 months ago so it isn't unreasonable that he might have healed.

But it seems like he played every single game for the Avs including 2 days before the trade. His TOI was pretty low in that last game even though it was a 5-0 blowout over the Hawks where you'd think the bottom 6 would play more so maybe he actually got hurt?

I think he didn't want to play in the AHL, and also didn't want to be bought out since that would have cost him $2.6M of real money this season.

Instead now he might get his contract terminated and lose out on the full $8M of salary he was earmarked to earn this season.
