Icon26 Blue Jackets sign JVR (one year, $900k)

https://twitter.com/user/status/1835419013691638071

Sucks that they ended up needing to sign a veteran LW at all, but hopefully JVR has a good year there.

Good signing and good fit for him. Obviously wanted it to be under better circumstances but I wish him and the Jackets the best this season

Did this help them reach the cap floor or do the still have work to do?

The answer to both questions is yes. It helps them get 900k closer, but they are still under by almost a mil and that's actually with them over the roster limit.

Yeah, watched Waddell's presser yesterday, he didn't think there would be any problem getting some forgiveness on their cap trouble to start the year. Trying to sort it out and everything, but obviously the team is pretty scrambled and overwhelmed starting the year after what they just went through.

What’s the penalty for being under the cap anyway?

I also wouldn't be surprised if another team does something to help out Columbus if needed - a trade or something. Obviously no one is going to give them a player of Gaudreau's caliber, but some filler guy that makes more than he should.

I read Danforth and one other guy likely start the year on IR. So they'll be able to start with 2 extra bodies which will help to start.

I don't think that it helps them any. This puts them at 24/23 roster spots based on capwages. Which means that they will still have to send a player making at least $775k down.

I think they'll need a couple of players making Lomberg/Bean money to actually get closer to the cap. They could also help some teams by brokering a deal and retaining salary as they still have 3 retention spots open.

Finally, I'm not sure if they have to hit the cap floor to start the season, or if they could just add salary throughout the year.

According to the CBA, ‘No Club shall, after commencement of the regular season, be permitted to have an Averaged Club Salary that falls below the Lower Limit for that League Year.’

So they do have to reach the floor on opening day.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Blue Jackets work out a handshake agreement with another team to put some overpaid schlub with an NTC on waivers at the end of training camp. That would allow the team to add salary by getting a player who would otherwise block a trade to Columbus.

Come on guys. The league isn't going to punish CLB for being under the floor this year.

They won't be under the floor. It will be worked out. That said, this isn't a cap floor move - it's a "get a LW" move. As was said, the net method to get to the floor but have only 23 contracts is to waive/trade two min salary guys and sign/trade for a 2 million dollar player.

If the CBJ is not under pressure to get above the cap floor, why would they want to bail other teams out from cap hell by taking on their expensive contracts?

I don't think the league will force CBJ to sign/trade for players to make up Johnny's cap hit to reach the floor...

Why not? For real... it's easy to get up to the floor... just sign the most talented schlub you can find to the minimum amount needed to get to the floor.... done. Losing Gaudreau was a tragedy but they shouldn't get to just ignore the CBA on account of it.

Serious question - I've never understood how difficulty getting to the cap floor is ever a consideration....can't you just sign somebody for a big overpayment on a one year deal?

Like if it was the Flames under Treliving, couldn't he have just signed Michael Stone for a one year $5M deal - problem solved?
