It's always sad to hear about these things. I can't say I was familiar with him, but I see he did play for the Hitmen at one point, and the Red Deer Rebels.
It sounds like he may have been another NHL enforcer plagued by injuries sustained from being an NHL enforcer.
From Wikipedia:
Quote:
In November 2017, Peat's father Walter sought a no-contact order against him.[14] In a series of text messages published in the New York Times, Walter described him as a violent, homeless, addict who suffers from severe headaches,[14] which he attributed to brain injuries received playing NHL:
Right now, I am at a loss of what to do, and who to turn to for help. Many night, I lose countless hours of sleep, thinking of what will happen, and am I doing the right thing. There are so many people who prefer to put a paper bag over their head and ignore the fact that Stephen or so many players suffer from these injuries. But, the injuries just don’t stop there, as the emotional, financial, and in some cases, physical injuries suffered by family members.[14]
However, Peat has disputed his father's accounts, saying "I am disappointed in my father since I once held him so high on a pedestal."[14] Walter reiterated his concerns in December 2017, saying that Stephen was living on the street, using drugs and possibly close to death.[15]
On September 12, 2024, the NHL Alumni Association announced that Peat had died at the age of 44 due to complications from an accident sustained two weeks prior.[16]

Feel gross that I used to love fighting.
Weird that any other occupation knowingly, even with their consent, if you put your employees in harms way, you are crucified, but not sports.
But they chose to do it!!!!! Doesn't matter. Adults talking, doesn't matter. You cannot hire someone to take a hammer and smash themself in the head. It's not allowed. Its the same thing.

Wrestling around with someone on the ice and hitting yourself in the head with a hammer are not the same thing. I’m pretty sure.

I don’t think that is the point he is trying to make. New Fotze can correct me if I am wrong but I think his point was that we know this causes major issues with brain trauma but as a society we seem to be more than willing to look the other way.

Right? Why not look the other way so we can see people pound each other's brains into mush?
