Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2024 - Round 23 Run Off
Welcome to the annual Calgarypuck Prospect Poll!
As per usual ...
1. Rank the prospects as you like. Upside, chances, or trade value
2. I will try and do one a day which should get us to mid to late August
3. Graduates and/or runoffs will be determined in each case
4. Please don't complain that the polls are going to deep. We go until all the prospects are ranked, so don't vote if you don't want to.

Went with Morton. He's older and has limited upside but i like his game and think he will be a full time NHLer by the end of the season.

Zarubin - as noted previously a time or 3, might be the best goalie in last draft class

Just can’t vote for mid round goalies, too unpredictable.

Morton's production in the NCAA and briefly in the A is super impressive. Probably should have been higher.

Gotta go with the 18 year old goalie here.
That said, I hope Morton becomes a Hathaway or a Jooris.

At 25 Morton falls into the "non prospect" description for me. I would have to vote for anyone, certainly under 20, ahead of him.

Maybe, that 21 year old that Colorado drafted seems pretty good.

I wonder, has anyone actually seen Zarubin play? I'd be happy to hear any notes that anyone has on the guy.

Agreed. It's going to be tough for him to breakthrough I think. He is 25 now and only has 13 professional games (all in the AHL) to his name. Other examples of guys that have broken through at that age or later have usually played a season or two at least in the AHL getting training and coaching guidance from NHL teams.
I suspect Morton will need at least a full AHL season and maybe two before getting an NHL shot, and not too many 26 or 27 year old NHL rookies become consequential players.
But still, it's worth mentioning in those 13 AHL games, he produced decently. Small sample size, but it's still a good sign. Plus, Conroy wouldn't have signed him if he didn't think he had a chance. The chance of him becoming an NHL regular is greater than zero, but I have a hard time believing it's greater than many of the guys still left on the list.

I voted for the prospect. 25 is closer to being a grandpa than prospect.

I get that.
but I also get the "played a pretty big role on the AHL team and will likely play a game in Calgary vs an obscure Russian goaltender that we may never see in North America"
I'm still jaded from the bus driver.

I think it is in reference to Andrei Medvedev, drafted by the Flames late in the 2nd round in 2001. A Russian goalie who apparently had killer instincts and reflexes, but was rather portly. I recall he looked somewhat like Cartman from South Park.
It's hard to find scouting reports on Zarubin. There was that video posted a couple of times now where some amateur scouts had him ranked #1 for 2024 draft eligible goalies. It's been posted a few times so I won't post it again.
Pronman had this to say:
Quote:
Corey Pronman - The Athletic - May 28th: "He's fast, but controlled in his movements not oversliding pucks that much. He's a smart goalie who anticipates the play well. The only real issue I have with Zarubin is his tendency to let in long-range goals, but everything else looks like an NHL goaltender."

I believe Medvedev was once listed at 6', 250.
