Default Polar Bear in Calgary Zoo Dies in Unfortunate Accident

My friend, his wife, and son were at the zoo when this happened a few hours ago.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7270026

Very sad situation. Apparently it was accidental, when one of the bears was kicked in the head in the pool. Really unfortunate for this to happen with so many people watching at the time.

Freak accident while the 2 bears play fought in the water.

Yeah, brutal news. We went for dinner with the polar bears event at the zoo. Must be absolutely devastating for the zoo staff.

Man...what is going on? The Calgary Zoo has a pretty rough track records for...'keeping animals alive.'

More than other zoos? I’ll be honest, I’ve never looked into news at other zoos.

Terrible news, my wife has friends who work at the zoo and these things always hit the workers incredibly hard.

As much as these things suck, an accident like this could have just as easily happened in the wild. This isn’t a case of human error at least.

Probably was an migrant polar bear with a previous record the "justice" system just slapped on the wrist on its previous offences.

Sounds to me like Siku wanted the space all to himself and made it look like an accident.

It sucks no matter what, but at least it was confirmed that it was a freak accident caused by normal bear behaviour and not negligence or human error.

First time was a scouting mission and the second time was to get the job done?

What other kind of pathological lunatic goes to the Zoo twice in one week?

Is the Calgary Zoo cursed?

It seems like they can't catch a break with their history of animal deaths. However, this time their crisis management has been commendable. The communication, messaging, and transparency have been notably effective.

I was initially worried when they announced their vet would perform a necropsy, but relieved to learn they also had a third-party evaluation.

It's a tragic incident, but it's good to see the zoo taking responsible steps to at least address it.
