History and the 9th Over All Pick.
It has been confirmed that the Flames will draft 9th over all in the 2024 NHL draft. Though time will tell what good comes from that selection. History can offer us an understanding of what to expect.
There has been 61 NHL drafts. Of those Fifty Four played chosen at 9th over all that have played at least 1 game in in the NHL. 20 defencemen, 33 forwards, and Flames Legend Brent Krahn is the only goalie.
13 currently play in the NHL. Most notably: Logan Couture, Mikael Granlund, Dougie Hamilton, Jacob Trouba, Bo Horvat, Nikolaj Ehlers, Timo Meier, Mikhail Sergachyov, and Trevor Zegras.
37 have played over 300 games. That excludes Zegras, Rossi and Guenther who are trending to eclipse that total.
7 have played more than 1000 games: Rod Brind'Amour, James Patrick, Brian Leetch, Doug Bodger, Joshua Bailey, Dion Phaneuf, Laurie Boschman
22 have accumulated more than 300 points. That excludes Sergachyov, Zegras, Rossi and Guenther who are trending to eclipse that total.
6 have more than 600 points: Rod Brind'Amour (1184), Brian Leetch (1028), Logan Couture (701), Cam Neely (694) and James Patrick (639).

So we either get a Calder candidate or a beloved radio guest host.

I'm really hoping the Flames' days of using top picks on goalies are far behind us.

Krahn's the only top 10 goalie pick. Kidd was 11OA, Muzzati was 21OA and Irving was 26OA.
Funny to say, but those 3 are in the top 50 first round goalie picks in games played. Kidd is 22nd and won't be passed soon by any first round goalie. Oettinger will and Samsonov might (and Askarov potentially).

IMO, throw away draft data from prior to 2005. It's a different world and league, hard to really compare today's era vs 20+ years ago.

That laugh is pretty infectious and has a nostalgic effect as it reminds me of John Candy. Not as simple of a choice as I thought. 60/40 will have to lean towards the Calder though.

That said, if they can snag Carter George, they should.

Looking back in history - you can say both were busts the way things turned out for the Flames. Well, Krahn was a huge bust - why the hell pick a goalie in the first round, especially in top 10?

Dion looked great in his first 3 years. His 3rd year being his carrer high IIRC.
There have been some great first round goalies but generally, yeah, don't like them as a first round pick.

Krahn was the worst homer pick ever! Picking a guy from Calgary because the draft was in Calgary. Pathetic.

Draft was different back then - Krahn was one of the top ranked goalies and Rick DiPietro went 1st overall.
But yeah by picking Krahn they missed out on stars like....
Mikhiail Yakubov,
Pavel Vorobiev
Alexei Smirnov
Ron Hainsey
Vaclav Nedorost
There is no player taken 10-20 in that entire draft that you're like "oh the made a huge miss by not taking him and taking Krahn instead". Just a bad draft.

10 years from now when we look at how #9 picks have worked out, the sentiment will be. 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

They all would have been better than Krahn!

Shows how many (very few) true impact players get drafted even as low as 9th . Highlights the true importance of bottoming out for a few years and getting franchise type talent vs getting stuck in this range

Maybe third round.
He's not that highly rated. Another smaller goalie at 6 feet , 161 pounds, although I never trust that info. Seen him listed anywhere from 5'11" to 6'1"

All I remember of Krahn was he could've made a living as an auctioneer. He talked so fast that my larynx would say "what?".
