They dump it in, and he reverse hits me hard, and I was just like I can't believe this. You're gonna reverse hit me? So I bang my stick on the glass, sort of screaming at him. He does the same thing on the ice - skates away, he's got the tinted visor on. I wanted to burry him, but I didn't do anything. The practice went on.

Now getting to know him more and more I respect him so much more, because he practices exactly like he plays. He was all over me, it wasn't just that practice. He was all over me for the rest of the year. He forechecked me hard at practice, he tripped me or whatever. He just plays so hard in practice that it continues to the game. He was one of those guys that would bring you into the fight. If we needed a spark, he'd give us a spark. He's actually a great guy, he's hilarious, he's actually ripped up and jacked. That's just kind of goes to show you what kind of guy he is on and off the ice. I love having him on the team I don't want to ever play against him, he owns me.

Funny story. Of course, if they ever did play each other, Weegar is so smart a player, he’d have Pospisil’s number.

Weegar is such a good player and committed to the Flames. I can see him take the C when Backlund's time in Calgary is over...

I was on board with shipping Popsicle off for a trade for 10th OA but listening to how Weegar talks about him, I think we should hang onto him.

He says draft picks are equity, that Conroy has lots of cap space, and that "obviously there's the retool" but...

"We want to get back to winning now...and I think that's where their (Conroy/Huska) heads are at. Both sides are on the same page"

It definitely feels like we ought to be listening to what the Flames are saying. This re-tool seems to just be about shuffling the UFAs out, and replacing them with players right away.

I'll wait and see what they actually do. Conroy could have targeted roster players in the the Zadorov, Tanev, and Hanifin trades if he really wanted too.

Do you really think a player is just going to be like the team sucks and they are all embracing a tank? lol

Yeah, was gonna ask if any player on a tanking team gave an interview where they just said "yeah, we're gonna suck for a few years and we don't care about winning".

Depends...trading Markstrom would be a pretty indication of the plan as that wouldn't be a "get back to winning" move.

Players want to win, I'm sure they are going to say they are trying to win.

Yeah I don’t know what people want here. They are in the entertainment business, and fans come out to see them play well and win. They aren’t going to spend all summer saying “yeah we’re gonna lose a lot of games, but that’s okay”. They’re going to admit there is a rebuild, and frame it like they’re still trying to win.

It’s insane to jump to conclusions about where Conroy is at based on what players are saying.

They can play a Markstrom deal off as a we need guys who want to be here kind of deal.

But if they trade Ras, the writing will be on the wall.

Hopefully our vets realize that with their continued good play and mentorship, they can be competitive again sooner than later.

Of course one line of the interview is where the tank-obsessed focus in on, but the whole thing was great. Weegar is such a great player to have on the team.

Love what he said about Pospisil.

Love what he said about wanting to play with guys who want to be here.

It’s clear he has a ton of respect for the team, the management, the fans, and even the media. And it’s clear how thankful he is for where he’s at and doesn’t take it for granted.

Future captain for sure.

Weegar is the only thing about the trade that stops it from being a complete disaster.

Did Conroy not?

Any team looking for rentals isn't going to giving away key roster pieces.
But Conroy did target packages that included alot of current NHL players. Kuzmenko, sharangovich, miromanov and grushniko(prospect but going into d+4 year). Kuzmenko was really the only one that came off as any kind of cap dump from the other side. So conroy obviously wanted these guys.

We will just need to see how the rest of the offseason plays out.

If they deal picks/prospects for like Necas and sign any decently big UFA, it will be clear they're just retooling.

If they sell Markstrom and draft with all their picks, only make a minor UFA move, then that leans more to the rebuild side imo.

Kuzmenko made the cap work. Miramanov isn’t really a roster player. Grushnikov is a prospect.
Sharangovich was the only actual roster player grab and that was done before the season started.
Playoff teams won’t give up good roster players but they will sell mediocre ones if they think it improves their team. I’m sure Hanifin could have been turned into Jeannot and some other player

I agree and time will tell how bad we need to be. I don't see many top UFA's wanting to come here anyways, and I don't see Conroy blowing too many picks he has right now.

Leafs got Matthews with a 69-point season - finished last in the league
Tampa got Stamkos with a 71-point season - finished last in the league
NJ got Hughes with a 72-point season - finished 3rd last in the league
Colorado got Mackinnon with a 67-point season - finished 2nd last in the league

Tons of elite stars getting picked top of the draft and their teams did not go full SJ tank mode to get them.

Guy literally said that he wants to get back to winning right away, and that he's happy to hear from his management/coach that they're aligned on that.

I agree, Weegar is awesome - also, probably worth taking what he says at face value - and what he said is what I posted.

As far as being tank-obsessed, yeah - I think the only way you build a championship team is with a foundation built on top-3 picks. The Flames have tried and failed over and over and over trying it the other way, so yeah - I'm hopeful we have some top-3 picks in our near future. The best players wins Championships, and they're generally/most consistently found at the top of the draft. If I'm labeled as tank-obsessed, does that make you obsessed with mediocrity?

I think moving Markstrom fits in with the approach the Flames have taken thus far. Move him out, hand the job over to Vladar and Wolf as a tandem. Marky may have soured on being here, and it feels like the post-season comments from himself and Conroy seem to lend themselves to that sentiment. Moving him out also likely gives the Flames even more cap-space to play with.

We'll see how it plays out, but I really won't be surprised if the Flames do go out and make deals that are a bit more focused on the immediate future rather than a bigger picture perspective - and perhaps that's just my slant from the years and years of history of them operating in just that fashion, we'll see. Conroy did say that the 7 year contract UFAs probably aren't in their plans for this Summer - so that's good to hear to be sure.

Edmonton’s did.

At least, their management, coaches and fans seemed to.
