Following with interest.
Problem is the best players have their own numbers.

What other numbers would compare to 19 tho, in terms of all-time greats who wore it?

19 is a good vote.
5 is good. Langway, Denis Potvin, Lidstrom, Larry Murphy, Geoffrion, Marcel Dionne (Detroit era)

66 and 99. That's how you learned quotation marks in school in the 80s and 90s.

Only four NHLers (and Doug Glatt) have worn this hilarious number.

GOAT!

Turns out Lindsay was 7 and Belliveau was 4 (4 is also a good number!).
I feel like I'm missing a really good Canadien #19 though. Gainey maybe?
Edit: Robinson!! Man, how could I forget him.

Yeah, but you're right to mention him anyway. I forgot all about Jumbo.

Yeah, 19 will be a tough one to argue against.
I just looked up Thornton's career, and yet another example of a Hall of Fame worthy player whose peak came well before age 30.

9 and 19 were definitely the most popular forward numbers growing up. This was when team numbers were 2-22 1,31. No one could choose any of these special numbers.
4 and 2 usually the most popular defence numbers.

9 is the original best number in hockey. Gretzky wore 9 growing up but chose 99 because it was already taken.

Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard, Lanny McDonald, Johnny Bucyk, Paul Kariya, Mike Modano, Bobby Hull. Oh, and that bum from Bumonton who played on Messier's line. 9 for me.
