The Legendary Horn-y Matthew Tkachuk
Well he made me eat my shorts these playoffs. There was no way his slow as molasses skating could ever be effective in the playoffs.... lol
He single-handedly dragged the unwilling Panthers into the playoffs. and took out the best NHL regular season team in league history. This is a Legend!
Gaudreau could play another 20 years and not have this type of impact in the playoffs.

His skating "issues" are and always have been ridiculously overblown.
He isn't the quickest, but he is one of (if not the), strongest skaters in the game.
He has always displayed the ability to get where he needs to be, with and without the puck, and then be able to use his ass and his strength to hold his spot.
Just a tremendous hockey player....and the biggest pain in the butt to other teams in the game.

Hope he wins multiple cups with Florida. By far he was my favorite flame since Regehr.

He does seem to cherry pick more often than not to compensate. Also he has some of the best puckluck ever! He stole all of that from the Flames this season!

As a fan that watched him a lot I wouldn't say the skating issues are overblown. He's straight up not a great skater. He's managed to overcome his footspeed with his elite skills and hockey sense as there are few players in the league as good as him around the net. Still he's 25 years old and I think the skating issues are something that will be something to watch as he gets into his 30's. It's possible he needed to be in a place where his creativity was allowed to flourish as we just never saw this version of him in Calgary especially in the playoffs. I'm not a big Paul Maurice fan but him letting Tkachuk loose has definitely worked out but it also helps when you have a goaltender playing god mode.

Me too.
I hated the pick when it was made. Like you I thought his skating wasn't NHL level. I've been wrong many, many times but this was my wrongest by a mile.
Dude is elite.

He's an ugly skater, but he gets the job done.
His other skills, like hand-eye coordination are elite.
It stings as a Flames fan, but he is one of the most effective players in the NHL. If we go by the actual definition of the Hart - he should win it. He's the most valuable player to his team.

Wait. You hated Tkachuk at 6th overall? Who else would the Flames have taken?
There was a consensus ledge after Tkachuk by almost all scouting reports. It was an obvious pick. There's a reason why you could hear Canucks fans groaning when Benning announced Juolevi.

Guys that arent at least average skaters get top 3 Hart votes, unless they play goal.
He is not in any way a below average skater and with his hockey IQ, is well above.
He does have one of the more unorthadox styles we've ever seen granted. It looks sloppy/choppy and weird, but truth is, he always gets where he needs to be when he needs to be there.

Unreal performance all season and now playoffs. Deserves the Hart, and most likely gets the Conn Smythe. Hurts that it isn't for the Flames.

Yeah, I’m not sure how anyone can call his skating “bad” when he always gets to where he needs to be when he needs to be there. He’s a great skater.
He doesn’t skate like McDavid, but he doesn’t need to.

I earnestly believe Tkachuk was not paying us lip service when he was saying he was willing to sign long term earlier in his career with us but Brad decided to bridge him and just as with the Gaudreau camp, there were some ruffled feathers with how they were treated. Poor coaching choices, bad UFAs, bad trades also hurt. We have gifted Florida two legends.
Hopefully the Conroy era give us something to positive to look forward to.

Just the mechanics of his stride are clunky. Crossovers in isolation look really bad, but it goes to show it doesn't much matter if you package it with a bunch of other elite things.
Like Hakan Loob, goofy ass skater but it worked.
Almost like the Moe Norman swing.
