Default January 10, Flames Practice

Good on Dube to get out on the ice before everyone else does at the practice start time to work on some things a day after he's scratched.

Good for him putting in the extra work. Hopefully he can see some better results when he gets back in. Huska’s comments saying Dube’s struggles are also affected by how he is used makes me wonder if Huska tries to get him going when he is back in the lineup… maybe Huska puts him on the second powerplay unit in place of Ruzicka for a couple games to see if he can get some time and space with the puck.

IIRC Sutter scratched him and he came back gangbusters.

Personally, I wish he had been doing this for the last few weeks. Perhaps he was and it just wasn't talked about. Just thinking it has been obvious for a while he was in a major slump, why wait until your scratched to put in the extra work.

Not quite practice related, but Wolf and Coronato are going to represent the Wranglers in the AHL all-stars.

Plus his diet, like he could totally have been working on that. His sleeping schedule also leaves something to be desired.

Obviously Dube has not been good at all but at this point I'd rather have him than Ruzicka. Tired of his turnovers and general lack of intensity.

Duehr has been pretty ineffective, as well. Pretty ironic that the 4th line is struggling so much when they came out of the gate so strongly to start the season.

Duehr has been such a disappointment - I thought he would be something similar to what Greer has been this year. But nope.

Dube needs to also work on his defensive awareness...great that he's working on his shot but he also needs to work on his play away from the puck. That's where he's struggled the most as an NHLer.

Lot's of talk he could potentially become a 3rd liner, he had the size, the speed and the shot.

So disappointing. He has been a complete ghost.

I understand Ruzicka being for the most part ineffective in a 4th line role. That's not his game, nor will it ever be. Duehr on the other hand is tailormade for that role, and for whatever reason it's just not clicking this year. He's been incredibly underwhelming. He is not using his two best attributes which are his skating and shot.

Maybe Gretzky was in the stands, bothering him.

Unfortunately you can't exactly teach hockey sense and defensive awareness is part of that equation.

Dube doesn't lack the will or effort to be solid defensively, he just gets lost in his own zone often chasing players he shouldn't.

We have 4th liners that should be 2/3rd liners and we have 1st liners that should be 2/3rd liners.

I know... mountains and molehills and all that... but, the one common takeaway from listening to guys like Gretzky, Jordan, Brady, Kobe, Nash, Crosby, etc... is how important the details are when you practice.

Like I remember Nash once talking about how he has to make a certain number of shots in a row before his on-court workouts are done. Like, there's no such thing as missing the net in practice. You're literally practicing what what you want to be able to do in a game... so even if it's really just a skating drill, but part of it is to take a shot... if you miss the net on that shot, you stop the drill and start it over, because missing the net is just unacceptable - no matter the circumstances.

Brady talked about how Gronk had a photshoot the next day, so he called Brady up to go throw the ball around. It was actually a funny story about how Gronk was partying all off season and then the day before a shoot was like, "I'm feeling kinda flabby... I wanna catch some balls to get into shape for tomorrow." So Brady's talking about how the two of them went to the park and Gronk ran routes for like 4 hours in the pouring rain while he threw him the ball... and everyone's laughing, but Brady's like yeah it's a funny story, but that ball never touched the ground once. 4 hours of running routes in the rain and they never dropped the ball once.

The point was... it doesn't matter what you're doing, the fundamentals are always the same. Don't miss the net. Don't drop the ball. Don't miss the basket.

Then when you're in a game, you can worry about some of other things you need to worry about, becuase you just don't miss the net. You don't even know how to. You've never even practiced it.

Take this for what it's worth. Dillon's dad has him visit my aunt's place of work at least 2-3 times a week. I've received several Flames piece of memorabilia from her, from his dad, from Dillon.

She talks hockey with his dad every time. Sounds like an extremely down to earth family, and Dillon puts in a crazy amount of extra time working on his shot etc at his parents place. Obviously hasn't translated so well this season, but from what I've been told, the attitude and work ethic are top notch.

Hard to do that when you're on the ice by yourself before practice.
