5 Things - Flames vs. Flyers

1. Tie A Bow On ’23

It’s about to get busy again.

After a three-day Christmas break, and now a three-day gap between home games, the Flames schedule ramps up once more with a calendar-closing contest against the Flyers. Get tickets

Calgary will hit the ice 11 times over the next 21 days, including a stretch that will see them start 2024 with six out of seven on the road, which makes tonight’s 2023 finale a worthwhile opportunity to make hay at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Flames might have new look vs. Flyers

In an attempt to ignite a couple of key struggling forwards, it appears Jonathan Huberdeau will line up alongside Elias Lindholm and Yegor Sharangovich, switching spots with Andrew Mangiapane.

Huberdeau, Calgary's highest-paid player, has not scored a goal in 17 straight games and been held without a point in 12 consecutive games. Mangiapane, who would play on a line with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman, has scored one goal in his past 17 games.

Happy New Year!!

Something's gotta give.

Can't see Huberdeau going another game without at least one point.

Big 7-4 win for the Flames.

Loss to the Kracken was a disappointing one. Philly seems to be improved this season under Torts. Flames seem to perform against contenders. I think they will win this one.

Feels like the Flames have a good recent record on NYE.

I'm picking them to win.

What’s up with Anderson? I don’t remember him getting injured or suspended?

Actually I do remember him moving slow after getting hit in the corner.

Don’t they have the best record in the league since November 1? I think I read that somewhere.

I’m looking forward to a 2024 full of roster movement so I’m not too hung up on individual game results, but that being said I’m cheering solely for wins on game day. I hope Markstrom is solid and the rest can aggregate enough goals to win. If I could make a New Year’s resolution come true for one Flame it would be for Huberdeau to have a full circuit reset in his paradigm and find some productivity not at the expense of defensive responsibilities. Mostly out of compassion for the man but also selfishly for the team.

If Huberdeau walks out the same game he played against Seattle he's good in my books.

Set up teammates 5 times in that game and had zero points to show for it.

Weegar: "We need to be consistent!"

I'd say "Mission Accomplished" Mr. Weegar.

You guys are consistent alright. Probably not in the way you meant.

I mean...Huberdeau hasnt gotten a point all month...even by accident! Thats Mr. Consistency right there!

Interesting to look at the stats of both teams. Both are averaging 3 goals for and 3 against, and both have subpar special teams (~95% combined PP/PK). However, the Flyers seem to end up in the win column more often than the Flames.

I think the effort is largely consistent. I think this team works every night.

...which means I think that this team has sent an excellent message to management. It's not a good roster. This isn't a roster that underachieved last year, and isn't underachieving this year. This is not a well constructed roster. It lacks top end talent at every single position.

I'm quite excited for Flames hockey in 2024. The organization's hand is being forced down a path that I'm excited for. Here's to a year of good drafting and development!
