Flames recall DeSimone. Coronato assigned to Wranglers. Tanev day to day.

Injury to Tanev put Coronato in a numbers game with defensemen. Needed a d-man, can't afford to have Coronato up until that gets resolved.

Huge bullet dodged if Tanev is only day to day

Hopefully Tanev is good to go after the Holiday freeze and can be moved early January. Team just can't play Russian roulette with these UFA's

Yeah, he looked pretty wobbly walking to the dressing room. I imagine he will be out at least as long as concussion protocol dictates (7 days?).

I don’t mind Coronato getting time in the AHL but IMO they’re not doing him any favors sending him up and down. It sounds like his confidence took a hit earlier in the season.
His next call-up should be because they want him to play ahead of guys like Ruzicka. There are other guys who can fill in when needed on a temporary basis.

I believe Coronato was classified as an emergency loan because they didn't have enough healthy forwards when he was recalled. Now they do, so he either had to be converted to a regular call-up or be sent back.

I just watched it again 10 times. Face first into the glass, you are right to suspect concussion vs shoulder.
NHL seems to have a bit of an epidemic of checking from behind the last week or so.
- Cousins on Gulbrandson was by far the worst. Cousins definitely took a liberty and buried Gulbrandson into the boards from behind in the danger zone. This could have been really bad. How those refs rolled back the match penalty, I will never know. Maybe because Gudbranson got up? (NTD: need to find a better video for this hit.)
- Colton on Tanev this was a dirty hit. Tanev never sees Colton coming and I don't think he should reasonably be expected to take that hit. If you watch ref #34 closely you can see he is looking towards the blue line just before the hit is delivered, I don't think he really saw the hit at all. Should have been a boarding minor at minimum.
- Kane on Brodin, kinda lay part of the blame on Brodin here, you can see him shoulder check, he knows Kane is there and puts himself in a bad position, but it's still on Kane to not bury him from behind. Should have been a boarding minor IMO. (You may want to mute the second replay of the hit so that you don't hear Louie's garbage take on the hit.)
- Robinson on Barron again Barron sees Robinson coming and puts himself in a bad situation. Robinson probably should have let up a bit. This is the "least" bad check yet somehow was the only one that ended up with a major + GM
I thought Torts' post game comments on Hathaway's hit on Hughes were bang on and as it turns out, quite prescient. (Still can't figure out why this play wasn't icing, watch the linesman at the bottom of the screen have an epic brainfart. Don't really see boarding either, Hughes looks to hit the ice first.)
Taking a hit is as much of an art as giving one, and with less hitting, the players aren't doing all they should be doing to protect themselves and absorb an incoming hit. Obviously the onus the onus will always and should be on the player delivering the check, but the "hittee" also has an obligation not to put himself in terrible positions. It is a contact sport after all.
I do wonder if the PA will do something about this, either through the competition committee or a special meeting. It's their membership that is hurting other members and clearly they can't depend on the NHL to do anything meaningful.

I don't think he minds the reward of the increased paycheck in the NHL. As long as the team was honest about it being only an emergency recall because some guys had the flu.
He was put in a position to succeed, and IMO he mostly looked like an AHLer that game. As long as he gets good feedback from the coaches regarding what they want him to work on, he'll be just fine.

This all makes sense. Coronato just isn't at this level yet. DeSimone gets another look, which he has earned.
I hope Tanev gets some time off to heal up.

Bouncing up and down between leagues boosts your experience and your bank account. I can’t imagine any rookies are crying over it; or feeling down on themselves… they are literally getting reps in the big league… where is the confidence lost?

Coronato needs some skating work and get his legs a bit in the AHL. Offensive instincts are there

Dueher may disagree, can't imagine he is happy sitting in the press box all the time. At this point he would probably prefer to be playing in the AHL as he is not going to develop just watching. Multiple games in the press box are fine for older vets, but Dueher is in prime development. I get it, he isn't waiver eligible so they have to keep him up, and he has been passed on the depth chart. Just pointing out he would probably rather be playing in the AHL and trying to earn his next call up then sitting in the press box.

I think he wants all the money he can get. He is 26 and that’s past prime development age. There is a good chance this is second last NHL contract.

Coronato doesn't have an nhl motor yet, hoping to see progress when he's nexted called up. Skill is nhl level, and shot is top notch, need to have at least one other elite skill to get to use that shot though. Improving any one of: hands, skating, strength, will help but skating is the most important and easiest to improve.

I don't get the hand-wringing either. Putting him in for a game against one of the better teams in the league gives him some more insight into what it takes to play in the NHL and he goes back down to continue to develop his own game. If young players can't handle that mentally, they probably don't have what it takes to succeed at the top level.

I didn’t say anything about a press box, and am talking about playing. He (Coronato) came up, played, went back down to play. He’s being moved around to play.
Can’t imagine Duehr would disagree with that. If Coronato is just eating popcorn in both leagues, and not playing, then yeah… they’d be experiencing the same thing.
