Pysyk, a native of Sherwood Park, AB, has skated in eight games for the Wilks-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League this season. The 6’1” rearguard played 68 games with the Buffalo Sabres during the 2021-22 campaign and has accumulated 521 total games in his NHL career with Buffalo, Florida, and Dallas. Pysyk was drafted in the first round (23rd overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Sabres.

TERM: One-year, two-way

AAV: $725, 000

BORN: Sherwood Park, AB DATE: January 11, 1992

Flames add a depth player who could perhaps fill in should another roster player or two move along...?

Safe guess: AHL depth that they had to dangle an NHL 2-way deal in front of to draw away from his old AHL team

Fun guess: MOAR TRADES COMING

Makes sense, the Wranglers D is a bit depleted ATM.

Yep. Expecting a Tanev move sooner than later.

I'm going with the second option

hahaha...WTF? I did not see this coming. Pysyk is as replacement level as it gets, so it's clearly just experienced roster filler.

Also interesting is he played with Huberdeau in Florida. Not expecting on ice chemistry but wouldn’t hurt to have him around if he a great guy and they mesh off ice.

Zadorov out, Poirier injured, Kylington unknown, Stone no loner playing. They need some depth that could play in the NHL if needed. An injury away from a very depleted back end.

...article states $725K salary, but isn't league minimum $775K now?

Certainly a bit of both, but I wonder if he's here to play in the AHL to allow more callups, or just to cover an NHL spot so they don't raid the Wranglers too hard

Either way, I'm happy enough to just sign a #7 vs trade a 4th for one

With Oesterle and Solovyov up and Poirier still out, the Wranglers need some depth. If he plays his way into NHL minutes, then good for him ... but I don't really see it for now.

Fun fact…. Mark’s Grandfather was a life long Flames Fan and STH. He passed almost a year ago and he would have been over the moon with this development. RIP Alec

Pysyk didn't play in the NHL after his achilles injury in 2022, did he?

no, he missed all of 22-23 and has been with the Penguins' AHL team this year (8 games, no points).

I think Pysk (fun to say) played both F and D when he was in Florida. Versatile and experienced. Probably a nice add for the Wranglers.

Yes league min is $775k. It could be a $775k cap hit, with a $725k salary because he starts the season 20 games in, or it could be a typo.

EDIT: a $775k cap hit is probably only going to get paid ~$555k(133/186 days remaining) for the year, so it doesn't work.

Didn't he get have a PTO with the Flames in recent years? Either that or some posters here were clamouring for him over another depth defenseman the team acquired in some trade or signing. There was some sort of link I'm remembering... or mis-remembering.
