Default Sam Girard (Avs) enters Player Assistance Program (Depression, Anxiety, Alcohol)

Sounds like he’s tackling a mental health battle. Good on him for taking it head on.

The NHL and the NHLPA has announced that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard has entered the Player Assistance Program.

Girard will be unavailable indefinitely but will still be paid, as per the rules of the joint program.

The 25-year-old has been out of action since registering an assist with the Avalanche back on Nov. 18. Girard has four points in 15 games this season.

“I have made a proactive decision to take care of my mental health, and will be entering treatment for severe anxiety and depression that has gone untreated for too long and led to alcohol abuse,” Girard said in a statement from CAA Hockey.

Good for him. Hopefully the program helps him deal with what he's going through. It's always better to be proactive about such things.

Good for him to get ahead of it before it gets worse. Takes a lot of strength and vulnerability.

Good on Girard for doing the right thing. It takes courage to admit you have a problem and then seek treatment. Best wishes to Girard for a successful treatment and getting his life back on track.

Talented kid. Glad he's getting the help he needs and seemingly has a good support system around him too.
