100th and 500th Point Locker Room Celebrations for Bread and Backs
I originally posted this in the PGT but I think these milestones deserve a thread. With how long Backlund has been in the league, I was surprised that he only hit 500 in the Seattle game. Mangpiapane enjoying brushing his hand through his new hair. Locker room seems happy, Hubby patting everyone and is the last off the ice. Hands out the 100th and 500th point pucks.

Backlund is the 13th player drafted by the Calgary Flames to hit 500 points (Monahan sits at 492). Next in his sights is Brian Bradley (503)
Mangiapane is the 28th Calgary Flames drafted player to hit 100 goals (others drafted at position 166 or later include Fleury, Suter, Loob, Titov, Makarov and Hoglund). He has Lombardi (101) and Clark (103) coming up. Dube is sort of the next likely notable (outside of Fox who is 18 behind DD ) but he's a few years away at best

Got to 500 quicker than the original two way forward, Bob Gainey (and he played on the team that invented firewagon hockey). Took 100 games than Lehtinen. Carbonneau is in the HOF with 663 points in over 1300 games. Bobby Holik is similar.
Some long careered defensive players never get there - Peca, Jarvis etc.
Yeah, I don't think a long-term deal to Hanifin hurts the team. By all means, move Lindholm, Zadorov and Tanev, but clearing out THREE of the team's top-five defensemen seems nuts to me. An eight-year deal for Hanifin carries him to 35-years old, and provides for a very stable defence core with Andersson and Weegar to build around. He skates so well and is smart enough of a player that he should continue to be a very reliable top-four defenseman for the duration of that deal.
Moving three of "big four" UFAs still gives this team a tonne of assets to build with, and opens up lots of roster room for young players. I think that if Conroy is going to extend anyone, it should be Hanifin.

Thats more than Dunn, Toews, H. Lindholm, Weegar, Sanhiem, Slavin, Theodore, Chychrun to name a few.
I don't see him in the same category as these guys but his ask is.
He wants top 2D $ but really he is a #3.
He doesn't have that offensive upside to warrant top pairing money IMO.
Contracts will always look worse than ones that were signed in previous years. In year 5 of his deal if it doesn't look like a favourable AAV compared to recent signings, then there's a problem.

I agree. He'd be the guy I'd tried to sign with his age and skating ability

Dunn: 27
Toews: 29
Lindholm: 29
Weegar: 29
Sanheim: 27
Slavin: 29 (UFA in 2025)
Theodore: 28 (UFA in 2026)
Chychrun: 25 (UFA in 2026)
Hanifin is younger than every one of these players except Chychrun, who will probably be +$10 m player on his next contract in two years. This is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

I realize that, I just don't think he is worth the ask.
As stated above, I don't see enough offensive upside in his game to justify such a massive contract.
Smooth skating, top 4, in the right age range are all positives, no doubt.
Limited offensive ability, having a tendency to make costly mistakes and asking for #2 D money offset those positives in a lot of ways.
I realize the fact we only have two dmen signed next season gives him even more internal value and leverage but I still have my doubts.
He's a frustrating player because you can see the talent and there are games sprinkled in where he is playing at his peak and looks amazing. Unfortunately, he just reverts back to the slightly above average dmen we see most nights after these breakout games.
Maybe its me expecting him to be something he is not, which I can admit and give him a break on...But if he is asking for that kind of a contract he will be paid to be that guy I'm expecting.

But, is it really such a massive contract?
Any deals for top-two defensemen in their prime-playing years moving forward are all going to be in the +$9.0 m range. I think $7.5 m is probably right in the ball-park for a very good #3 defenseman.
