Yeah this is awful, know someone who was at the game, genuinely awful scenes. Even hit media here in UK which never happens for any hockey, just sad it's for something like this.

Terrible news, I'm assuming they don't have the type of trauma care at arena's over there like we have as they had to call in a critical care paramedic.

That's awful. I saw the story earlier and it said that he was in critical, but stable condition. I didn't expect him to pass away. Condolences to his family.

Sad news just out that Adam Johnson has died.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey/67253892

I hope that his family, friends, teammates and all who loved him find the care and support they need after this awful tragedy.

Rest in peace.

So sad. I feel for the Sheffield player who cut him, this is something that’s going to weigh heavily on him despite it being an accident. Hope he has the support he needs.

Also, wonder if something like this finally pushes neck guards to be mandatory in more leagues. This could easily happen to anyone at any time.

This was always something I feared could possibly happen to a player. I know there was an NHL goalie this happened to but he was able to recover. Like codynw said, I hope the player who cut him is able to overcome the trauma he’s gonna experience after a freak incident like this. RIP Adam

A couple close calls and now a death. Yeah it's probably time to rethink the whole neckguard being mandatory.

Hitting global news outlets now, such a freak accident and tragedy. My heart goes out to his family, friends, teammates.

Just saw he was playing for Nottingham. I've been to a few games in Nottingham, it's possibly the biggest hockey town in the UK. A lot of folks there really follow hockey closely, both UK and NHL.

It also happened to Richard Zednik.

Looks like it was a much more violent impact then the Malarchuk or Zednik accidents.

So brutal, I would definitely look long and hard at neck gaurds if I was the NHL or any other org that doesn't require them.

OMG, so terrible.
This is news you never want to hear but always thought you eventually would in hockey.

Malarchuk never got over the trauma of his close call. I wonder if the PA will bend on equipment mandates.

It’s a horrible incident and I wish nothing but peace and support for Adams family and the surrounding people impacted. This is awful news.

But this has only happened 3 times in the last century. No reason for mandatory neck guards when this is exactly what the title says, a freak accident. 0.0000001%

And yet we could have prevented the one death.

Neck guards will not change the way the game is played, make them mandatory. Prevent the small chance of another player dying seems like a slam dunk.

Is this the first blade-related death in the history of hockey?

Gotta think Matt Petgrave is going to need some counselling after all this. Going to be tough to move forward.
