I guess getting all your young guys locked up long term isn't a horrible strategy.

With all these long extension announcements, I really hope the Flames will extend Lindholm and/or Hanifin long term soon.

I don’t.
These guys getting locked up are 21-23 not 29

Locking up their young core long-term. Smart

The Sabres are going to be a…uh…tower of uh…

The Sabres have certainly rounded the corner under Kevyn Adams.

Exactly. I don’t want any part of a Lindholm extension.

That will probably prove to be well worth it.

Guy is gonna be a player for sure.

Might take 2-3 more years to get his full effect, but he will be a premier dman in this league.

Seems like another good signing. Can anyone think of an example when signing a young player that’s projected to be a star player in the NHL ended up being a bad move? I honestly can’t think of any examples off the top of my head.

However, there are numerous examples where signing a young player to a bridge deal ended up being a mistake because they ended up costing a lot more later or they ended up leaving the organization earlier than they could have had they been signed long term.

Numerous. Rick DiPietro probably the biggest. But generally these mid range ones work out well. Locking goalies is a terrible move though.

Well, the Flames locked up Monahan to a long-term deal and ultimately ended up paying a 1st to get rid of the deal. Although, you could say a lot of that was because every part of his body got injured at some point

Good example. That’s going back quite a few years though. Anything in the last 10 years that anyone can think of?

Okposo? RNH? Josh Anderson? I really think generally it works out fine when you establish a guy is worth it. Injuries are the thing that derail things but if you have the skills and size you’re probably looking alright.

Not quite the same level, but Ottawa signed Colin White to a 6 year deal worth 28.5 million after his rookie season, where they thought he was going to be a top 6 mainstay. He regressed and was eventually bought out, and makes league minimum with Pittsburgh right now.

That’s a good example. It does seem like it’s rare for these contracts to backfire.

Sean Monahan. People hate it, but the last three years of that contract were bad. 2 years were good and 2 were very meh.

I think what the Sabres are doing is a really smart experiment. They’ve assembled a bunch of young pieces who will grow together rather than just one year of tanking. And they only had a couple pieces and forced the accelerated rebuild guys would feel rushed and would likely falter. But they are all well supported and look like it’s a matter of time before they put it together.

on the flip side, Flames didn't go long-term with Matthew Tkachuk and he walked right out of the team

Yeah and it's a real shame because he was begging to sign a long term contract and dedicate his career to the Calgary Flames.
