DJ Smith fired as Sens coach, Jacques Martin takes of an interim coach

Could see this coming when they brought on Martin a few weeks back to consult.

Perhaps he can team back up with M.C. Johnson and hit the club circuit.

Jacques Martin is basically their Darryl sutter (coached the respective teams in 2 similar eras). Won the jack Adams for them in the late 90s

Not sure why they didn't change coaches in the offseason. It was clear that they had gone as far as they could go with Smith.

I think they saw the new coach bump EDM, MIN, and STL got and decided to do the same.
Since the coaching change:
EDM: 10 - 5 - 0
MIN: 7 - 2 - 0
STL: 2 - 0 - 0

Had to happen. That team has seriously underperformed all year. They have a good roster that should be right in the playoff picture (injured Chabot and mediocre goaltending notwithstanding), but for whatever reason they just haven't taken a serious step forward and in some ways are regressing.
Clearly Smith was never the long term solution, but is Martin the answer? Maybe just a stabilizing veteran coach, but I don't think he'll turn them around overnight.

I'm guessing setting him up as the interim allows the new GM, whenever they're hired, to bring in their own person.

I know they got rid of the GM.. but who saw Korpisalo's career and thought - this is the steady goalie I want to give a 5 year contract. The guy plays himself out of a job every 2-3 years in between good seasons.

I have to think Don Granato is next and that's a place I could see Berube resurface.

That sure seemed like a long firing - feels like DJ Smith has been getting fired since early November. Feel bad for him hanging in the wind like that for so long.
They should have fired him earlier if they expect the team to turn the season around. They sit last in the Eastern Conference, and the playoffs are likely out of reach without getting a crazy coaching-bump. This should have been a team in the playoffs - or at worst, a bubble team in striking distance, not a lottery team. Will be curious to see if they have a coaching bump, and if they do, how long it lasts.

Probably the right move to replace DJ Smith, but with Jacques Martin?
