Wow they're really all in on the young core. Following the EA sports model of betting on potential.

This could end up being a bargain in the back half of that.

He had a good rookie year last year but $8M seems like a huge bet.
I also don't hate the bet but I don't get doing it now. I don't see a world where he's worth much more than $8M next year unless you think he's winning a Norris.

Ottawa all in on their core and paying guys more than they are worth at the time of the deal. Looks to have worked out well for them with Tkachuk and Stutzle so I won’t hate on this deal. I made a mistake of thinking the Devils were way off with the Highes deal which will be a steal for years to come

Ottawa is doing what Canadian markets ought to do, and what Edmonton did with Draisaitl and McDavid.
You believe in the player and they’ve shown the promise? Lock up their core years and be done with it. Paying players in their prime is better than the alternative.
Buffalo looks to be doing the same. Pay young players what they’re worth today/tomorrow, and don’t grind them.

Yeah, it might sound like a scary number but you have to gamble on young guys living up to, or exceeding the cap hit, to get bargain contracts.
I'm sure there will be contracts that blow up in mangers' faces, but these seem like a better bet at returning value, versus 8 year $10/year contracts for 30 year olds.

Some of these are shots at Treliving but he did lock up our young guys to a 7 and 6 year deal.
The Tkachuk thing is unfortunate but it was a player who clearly wanted to set himself up to the have the option to leave.

He wouldn’t have gotten him signed for less.
Sanderson is already a very good dman.
He’s only going to get better.

Sanderson isn't as proven as guys like McDavid, Draisaitl, Fox, Makar, etc where when they got their big deals.
It's still a pretty big risk - this deal makes him the 14th highest paid dman in the NHL for the 24-25 season.
He still had a year left on his ELC too - why not just wait a bit - honeslty unless he wins the Norris I don't think he's getting more than $8M next offseason.

I think he only did that because Calgary could not afford to go long term with him, so he took the next best thing.
The Tkachuks have always taken the long term money when offered.

If he'd waited a year, I can't see how he would've gotten more. $8m for a player of Sanderson's track record, at this point, is bonkers.

That was reported to be the hold up signing him. He wanted a long term and Treliving wanted to bridge him.
I like what Ottawa is doing here. If you have young players that you are confident in, lock them up to the longest term possible. If you are not sold on them, then bridge them. Either way can be a risk, but players are going to be less forgiving if you offer shorter deals for less money if they end up proving they were worth the long term deal.

Calgary should have done something like this with Tkachuk, in the same way they did it to a lesser extent with Andersson. Bet on a franchise player and move heaven and earth in order to make it work in the future.
This is a solid bet on a solid player. I imagine this deal looks criminal in Ottawa's favor within 2 years, depending on how the cap is projected to play out.

Hughes and Hischier are absolute steals for a long time. Devils are very fortunate with those contracts.
This is a little early to say, but it's probably worth the gamble.

Worth the gamble. Sanderson is one of the NHL's best young D, and a future star. Pleasure to watch.

Imagine going into the last year of Gaudreau's contract and year 5 of 8 for Tkachuk this year. Gaudreau at 8 and Tkachuk at what 8.5? Damn
